Immigration to the U.S.
Binders and Reimers’ “All Nations Under Heaven” discusses the influx of immigrants from different countries mostly from Europe and Asia. It describes how different races and ethnic groups of these various countries migrated to New York City, bringing with them a wide variety of cultures, and traditions, and how their interactions with other groups made a huge impact on New York City history. The events have been shown in a chronological order focusing on the time period from 1800s to World War I. The chapters listed also show the main events of the period, problems they faced, and how they assimilated into the American identity while at the same time preserved their ethnic identities.
If a huge budget was available for a website to be made, I would make an interactive website that showcases the different ethnic groups and races, when, how, and to which areas they migrated, and the social, political, economical push and pull factors for their immigration to New York. A vast amount of pictures, primary and secondary sources, audio, and other multimedia content would be inserted to make it more visually appealing, and I would link the groups to their modern day descendents so the audience can relate to them in a way. I would also integrate statistics depicted in charts and graphs to show the amount of inflow and how they have increased or decreased overtime.
