Dead Rabbits in NY

With Amsterdam placing a dead rabbit on a fence signifying his return and Priest Vallon being the leader of the group, the “Dead Rabbits” plays a role in the movie not discussed in the blog. The “Dead Rabbits’ is a gang formed during the 1850s with Irish American roots. Dead was slang for very while rabbit is derived from “raibead,” which stands for a man to be feared. The gang was known for being thieves and thugs. They constantly partook in gang ways against The Guards in Five Points, and associated themselves with the emblem of a dead rabbit impaled on a spike.

However, the movie, “Gangs of New York,” tells the story of the Dead Rabbits in a highly fictional story according to Wikipedia.
