The effort to fight such social problem along prostitution  leaded to form  the women’s  Christian  Temperance Union  in 1874 which  actively  put a lot of pressure  and called to close these saloons , and result  it leaded to state  and national prohibition laws. I recall the NY governor Eliot Spitzer,  who  resigned due to a prostitution issue that came in media which indicate that this problem still exist but become more professional than in late 19th century.
