The cities were tremendously affected by the Great Depression. One reason was unemployment. Many were unemployed and since the cities were overpopulated, majority of the citizens remained without a job causing the economic turmoil to be magnified; “Unemployment loomed as one of the most serious problems facing FDR when he assumed office” (201) because people could not support their families. Many democratic voters who chose FDR were mostly from the cities primarily because the industries “migrated” to the suburban areas leaving the city folks mostly helpless.
