Educational Reform

With the advances of technology, it was only a matter of time before these advances reached the classroom.  As we all have noticed, classrooms have become more technologically advanced with every passing day.  Whether it is “Smart” boards in the classroom or overhead PowerPoints now the focal point of every classroom lecture, the technology bug certainly proved to be a contagious one.  As Chudacoff mentions in Chapter 7, innovations to academics were crucial to social advancement.

“One of the most important educational innovations proposed by reformers was vocational training” (Chudacoff 161).  Reformers hoped that this change to the education system would make learning more relevant to everyday life.  This trend continues even to this day.  Now that we as a society have a grasp on the curriculum to be taught in classrooms, it is crucial that funding continues to be provided to educational facilities to stay modern.  Every day there is a new idea or advancement in some form of technology.  Students can learn a whole semester’s worth of material without leaving their bed.  Now that computers have become less of a luxury and more of a common item in households across America, schools have become more comfortable with these technological advancements.  As important as it was to make the material relevant to everyday life in the 1900s, is as important as it is now for us to stay up to date with technology.
