The Name’s Tweed…Boss Tweed

While scrolling down the Wikipedia page on Gangs of New York I observed that William Magear Tweed (played by Jim Broadbent) would be portrayed in the movie. William Tweed was notoriously known as “Boss Tweed” who oversaw Tammany Hall, the political machine in the 19th century New York city politics. He was quite on the big side physically.

According to Wikipedia “Boss Tweed” an extremely wealthy man and one of the largest land owners in New York city at that time. “…a director of the Erie Railway, the Tenth National Bank, The New York Printing Company, as well as the  proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel” (Wikipedia William M.Tweed). He heavily( no pun intended)  influenced New York city politics through Tammany Hall. Apart from his wealth and property and his major influence on the city’s politics, he also had his loyal voters who he promised jobs from his projects. However he incarnated due to embezzlement.

One Response to The Name’s Tweed…Boss Tweed

  1. I believe the choice of character for “Boss Tweed” could have been better!! He is upose to be physically big, and he is certainly not in the movie.
