… and so they ended the War with a “Bang”!!!

5. The expansion of opportunities for same-sex relationships.

4. Migration to the suburbs and the “Sunbelt”, which was that area surrounding the Southwestern states and majority of the old Confederacy.

3. The expansion of housing which contributed profusely to the development and growth of suburban and urban regions.

2. Retail Development occured subsequent to the residential expansion which provided numerous facilities for residents and also contributed to the development of the city.

1. Subsequent to the Depression, population grew within the black communities. According to Chudacoff, those neighborhoods had grown “shaby”. However, a sense of unity and togetherness was development. The seemingly overpopulation of the area fostered unity, which I believe is of profound vitality. One may believe that, in comparison to all the other occurences that took place subsequent to World War 2, this is somewhat unimportant. However, I believe that every great outcome resulted due to people working together. Therefore, the unity and the fact that people are working together makes the city what it is today – a city of greatness.

Changes Between 194I & 1974

1) The integration of minorities from ghettos and segregated areas for minorities to urban cities. However various forms of racial discrimination still occured.

2) Increased partaking of women in the labor industry in place of the men that went off to war.

3) The 1949 Housing Act that was passed to provide ” a decent home and suitable living environment  for every American family”.

4) The increase of welfare services provided to low income earners especially unemployed women with Dependants. “In 1970, the welfare budget of New York City alone was $1.4 billion”.

5) The general increase in salaries due to the reduction in the depression rate.

*The integration of African-Americans and Mexican-Americans helped jump start civil rights movement. Due to the discrimination brought about by the integration, civil rights campaigns headed by Martin Luther King  challenged discrimination by protesting in the  south before the the national march to Washington. Also 12000 new Mexican-American voters were registered in 1940, Los Angeles by the Community Service Organisation.

WWII Got Me Rich!

1) As many historians state, World War II was the major cause of mobilization, lowering depression from 25% to 1.2%, and the federal bureaucracy increasing in size from 1.1 million to 3.4 million.

2) Due to participation of men in the war, women were relied to work and fill in the roles in the labor industry. ” More than six million women entered the labor force during the war” (Chudacoff 217).

3) Similar to the reliance on women for labor, African Americans and Mexican immigrants were also another form of labor, where 1.6 million African Americans migrated to industrial cities to seek better work conditions and higher pay while more than fifteen thousand Mexican workers found jobs in Chicago and Los Angeles.

4) Entertain in the form of nightlife took place in cities, providing relief and an “escape” from reality with swing bands, nightclubs, bars, restaurants and movie theaters.

5) Housing expansion, which led to the further development or urban and suburban areas. Shopping centers with free parking,  the Interstate Highway Act of 1956  and areas of leisure such as movie theaters and restaurants are such examples.  This led to an increase of population in the suburban area and in urban cities.

World War II being the main reason of mobilization is why I made it priority over all the other changes. Although the New Deal and multiple federal acts made achievements in getting the country out of depression, it was the massive military spending that increased urban growth and balance the economy. An increase and spending and an increase in job opportunities brought prosperity to the United States.

Seeds of Change

1. Women became leading components of war industry manufacturing, replacing the men that went to war.

2.  Because of the sex segregated environments cultivated by the war, establishments were created that catered to those with same sex desires. Rapidly spreading from large cities like New York and Chicago to smaller cities across the country, the seed had been planted for representation of the LGBTQ community and by the 1950’s groups had begun to form for homosexual civil rights.

3. The government let mexican workers known as braceros into the U.S. for short term work in industrial fields drastically changing the work force and unforeseen changes in immigration laws for the future.

4. The entertainment industry became a leading source of employment for soldiers on leave  while creating unprecedented revenue in most cities.

5. The new rise of mass suburban housing projects lead to overlooked and yet significant negative changes to the environment.

For me, points 1-3 seem to be the most important because they seems to be the seeds for social, sexual, and gender equality. These seemingly small advances for the minorities of the country have grown immensely since the war and have redefined equality in this country.

The not so central park(s)

During the great depression, many noticeable changes occurred for a multitude of cities across the U.S. However, it seems to be the culmination of little changes that created a bigger impact during the great depression. A very important and yet seemingly overlooked factor was the reallocation of government spending. Everyone had different priorities for how they thought money should be spent or saved and the department of parks and recreation, deemed unnecessary by those with power, suffered a major loss. Although in NYC the department stayed intact with significantly reduced funding, many other departments of parks and Recreation were completely annihilated across the country

Changes During WWII

1. Unemployment decreased; A decrease in unemployment is the most important change to me because once the Great Depression hit, a lot of people lost their jobs and the unemployment rates were really high. So a decrease shows a major change in both the economy and society. “The war put America back to work” (Chudacoff 216).

2. Military spending increased urban growth

3. Wages and Salaries increased

4. Mexicans were allowed in the United States on short term work contracts

5. Increase in working women

Continual growing population

According to Homberger (p.55), when the British Army and their loyalist allies evacuated New York in 1783, the population of the city was 12,000. The demobilization of the revolutionary army, and the return of many patriots who had fled the city when the occupation began, caused the population to more than double between 1783 and 1786. Nonetheless, Philadelphia remained the new republic’s largest city, and was not to lose its place for two decades. When the first federal census was completed in 1790 Philadelphia, with a population of 42,520, substantially exceeded New York City at 33,131. Rapid population growth over the next three decades largely explains the dramatic physical expansion of the city. As we could see New York’s population outstripped “natural” growth, and was enhanced by a flood of migrants into the city from New England. Needless to say that population during any way is getting down. But what factors effect on the population growth after the war is really important. For New York these reasons are the following: NY is a commercial center, it is near water so people could fish for food, entry to the ocean, port and transportation. There are a lot of American people died during the revolutionary war, but people came back there, came new people and will come then.

Great depression

The great depression had a huge impact on the various cities. The economic decline gave the government power to do whatever they pleased . They needed a solution to the unemployment problem that was going on around them. In 1931, the Organization on Unemployment Relief was organized “to encourage local communities to care for their jobless citizens” The FERA distributed 500 million dollars through out the city to ensure more jobs and oppurtunities.
