Before World War 1, The American flag was used for advertisement. During World War 1 the American flag became a test of patriotism. Those who weren’t loyal to  the flag or stated critical statements about it would have to face serious consequences for example, imprisonment or kissing the flag. Those who believed in patriotism supported America, The economic system, The war, etc. American Protective League (APL) assisted the Dept. of Justice by identifying german sympathizers and counteract the activities of radicals and antiwar activists. I understood the role that patriotism took part in during the war. Therefore I believe Foner said enough on this topic.
