“Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid

Mother, I just want to be myself, not your puppet. She expects me to wash all the clothes, sew on a button, hem a dress, iron my father’s shirt, sweep a house, and cook food. She wants me to eat properly in front of people and not to sing benna in Sunday school. My mother also teaches me how to smile to different people. Basically, my mother wants me to know everything she knew. But that’s not what I really want. I understand her purpose to teach me everything is to prevent me from getting hurt. She uses her experience to teach me how to have a better life. As a girl, I only want to play with the other kids. I don’t want to know how to do all these chores yet. Here my mother tries to act as a baddy, she prohibits my freedom and my happiness. Because she doesn’t want me to encounter any bad incident. From all of her expectations, I can tell that my mother loves me more than anyone else. Mother I love you too, but this is my life! I want to choose my own way to live. No matter how bad I suffer, I can handle all of it. Mother, do you know that mistake is the most valuable thing in life? I want to experience more mistake, so that I can learn and prevent from doing it again. How can my life be perfect without encounter any failure? Lastly, I am not a slut and I will not become a slut. Trust me mother, one day I will become as tough as you are. But right now I only want to squeeze some breads.

Mrs. Dalloway

Mrs. Dalloway and Septimus never encounter during their life. They seem very different and disconnect, but they both have the same state of mind. They both struggle from their life. As result, Mrs. Dalloway accepts her life as what it is, and Septimus releases himself by commit suicide. Somehow, they approach their life in a similar way. Virginia Woolf uses the quotation from Shakespeare’s Cymbeline: “Fear no more the heat o’ the sun/ Nor the furious winter’s rages,” this quotation means that there is no fear in death after struggle from all the difficulties of life. Mrs. Dalloway thinks that death is very natural after she experienced the deaths of her family. In addition, Septimus believes that his death will bring him freedom.

The appearance of both characters represent life and death, and they are connect by their belief of life and death. They symbolize a work of art in the world. They have their unique style of lives. It is different, but it is the same too. Mrs. Dalloway Hidden Pattern

Journey to Baruch

As usual, multiple alarms couldn’t wake Zhenhua up. Suddenly Zhenhua woke up with frightened. Did he just had a nightmare? Zhenhua got out of his house as soon as possible, but still late. He walked down the street to the train station, and he asked himself did he wore too much since yesterday. As always, the D train arrived few minutes early. Zhenhua just missed the D train, so he sat on the chair and told himself that never wake up late again. After Zhenhua got on the D train, he saw a gorgeous girl right next to him. What a coincidence! Zhenhua saw her every Tuesday on the D train even he was late today. As Zhenhua got off the D train at Broadway Lafayette St where he transferred to the 6 train, he saw Amy, a girl in his accounting class. They talked about their accounting group project and midterm grade in the 6 train. After the discussion with Amy, Zhenhua thought about dropping his accounting class. Eventually, they got off at 23rd street, walked down to Lexington Ave and made a left turn to Baruch. The sound of an alarm approached Zhenhua, his eyes opened and woke up from his dream. My first impression for “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh is powerful. This painting gives me the feeling of infinite life. In fact, by looking at the real painting is very different from looking at the internet. I had a much stronger feeling toward this painting by observing in front of it. In my own perspective, I can see that this painting depicts the nature, life and death. In addition, this painting shows Van Gogh’s observation toward the country from his window. Vincent van Gogh also includes his imagination, memory and emotion into this painting. According to Van Gogh’s passion toward this painting, I can feel the contradiction of his life. Vincent van Gogh paints his painting in a time before sunrise, therefore he includes the morning star in his painting. This painting shows the dark and light as death and life. According from Vincent van Gogh, he uses the star and moon to represent the sun as light. Since at night, there is only darkness, but under the star and moon, we can still see the whole country. Furthermore, the stars represent the hope that we have in our life. On the other side, the enormous tree in this painting represents his entire life. Vincent van Gogh uses himself as a tree to compare to the infinite sky and star. Van Gogh indicates that his life will living along with the nature forever. The way that Van Gogh paints his painting by swirling the sky and stars give me a feeling of mystification. For example, we living in this world, often find ourselves lost our dream and hope. So the purpose of the star is to create light at nighttime that leads us to find our way out in darkness. Meanwhile, this swirling sky and stars also give me a feeling of eternity. Therefore this painting is vary to different people by how they view this painting. In fact, there is no real meaning in this painting. Everyone has different experience toward their life, therefore the real meaning of this painting is base on their own thought.
