I Can’t Even Open my Mouth
The one thing that stuck me about this essay is that it is true in so many cultures. When we live with our families for so many years, you feel you’re always being criticized because the first issue was never resolved. Parents are always telling their kids that they are yelling or talking to you about a serious issue because they care. Children don’t see it that way. They see it is being criticized for everything that they do. Some children would often say, “If you cared, you would let me do what I want to do.” Parents don’t see it that way.
Growing up I have realized that most of the things my parents have said is because they cared, some of them, not so much. My mom always wonders why my room is such a mess and constantly ”nags” (as I put it) me about it. Is her nagging me about it going to get me clean it? Maybe, eventually. In this essay, children just want control over themselves and want their parents to stop controlling them.
The most striking thing about this essays is that we can all relate to it in one way or another. Humans by nature do not want to be criticized by other people because it is hurtful and we believe we are right in what we are doing at that moment.
