Tartuffe 62

Orgon goes to church to pray to God for all the happiness in his life. As Orgon leaves the church, he sees Tubed on his knees praying to God. Orgon asks Tubed why he is outside of the church instead of being inside the church. Tubed says that he is not worthy of being in the church because he basically is worthless, and that he would disgrace the name of God and the church if he was praying inside of the church. Tubed is happy just to be alive and grateful to God that God allows him to live. Tubed will continue to pray on the hard ground, even though his knees become very rough from doing so. Orgon seemingly foolisly offers Tebud his home and whatever he can to help, as he did for Tartuffe.                                                                                                                   Tubed is “debut” backwards. Debut is French for “start” or “beginning”, according to Google translate. The use of this name, in this way, is to show that this ending actually goes back to the start of the story. This gives a possible idea of how Tartuffe came into Orgon’s life. Also, the name shows that this is the start of another story for Orgon.

Tartuffe 61

This scene is right before the double wedding of Mariane to Valere, and Damis to Valere’s sister. They are in the church and getting ready for the wedding. Mariane and Damis with Dorine in one room, and Valere and his sister in another room, as they wait for the guests and preparations to be ready. The plan is first for Valere to walk his sister down the aisle and give her away to Damis, then Damis will walk Mariane down the aisle and give Mariane away to Valere.                                                                                                               Valere is nervous and wants to see Mariane to help calm his nerves. Dorine doesn’t allow Valere to see Mariane because it is suppose to be bad luck to see the bride before the wedding. Damis offers his words and Mariane reassures Valere of her love. Valere feeling slightly relieved heads back to his sister. Dorine has the final say as she should.                                                                                                                     This is a sweet scene and the happy ending that they deserve.

Tartuffe 62

Orgon(inside the church):

Lord, thank you for all you have given to me.

My family and I are as happy as can be.

I will never again bring shame,

Or Blame, upon your name.

Heaven, bless me and my family.

                                                                                                          Orgon(walking out of the church):

Why do you pray out here,

And not in there?

                                                                                                 Tubed(kneeling on the ground in front of the church):

For out of fear,

I do not belong in there.

I have no home, money, or family.

I dare not such an indiginity,

To the church or Holy Father.

I dare not be a bother.

To be alive and able to pray,

On any given day,

Is a blessing enough,

Even if my knees are rough.

                                                                                               Orgon(offering his hand):

Poor fellow, this pious man!

Let me do what I can.

Please come with me,

And you will be happy as can be.

Valere(knocking on door):

Mariane, the woman I most adore,

Please open this door.

                                                                                                     Dorine(coming out of the room):

This is your wedding day,

And to your dismay,

You may not see her at all,

Or bad luck will roam the hall.

                                                                                             Damis(peeking from behind the door):

Known is your love for my sister,

And soon you will be her mister.

Soon we will be brothers,

And not just friends like others.

                                                                                                       Dorine:

This double wedding soon will be,

A delight for all to see.

First, you will walk with your sister,

And she will wait for her mister.

You will wait with a smile,

As Damis walks her down the aisle.

                                                                                               Mariane(from behind the door):

Valere wait for me at the altar.

I promise I shall not falter.

                                                                                                       Dorine:

You heard what she has to say.

Now, without further delay,

Back to your own sister,

Who wants Damis as her mister.

                                                                                                    Valere(as he walks away):

I will no longer linger.

When I see your finger,

Adorned by the beautiful ring,

My heart will sing.

                                                                                                        Dorine:

The four will soon be happy,

And singing a love melody.

The ending is pleasant but disappointing to me. I would’ve…

The ending is pleasant but disappointing to me. I would’ve liked it more if Orgon was also punished and the estate left to Damis.                                                                                                                     Image taken from:

Tartuffe deserves all that happens to him, especially since he has committed all of the seven sins.                                                                                                                Image Taken from:                                                     http://b.vimeocdn.com/ts/925/909/92590973_640.jpg

Tartuffe 56

Despite the fact that this is suppose to be set in Paris, I still imagine it being set in Britian. This is what I imagine the officer coming to get Orgon looks like.                                                                                                                                         Image taken from Google.

The situation goes from bad to worse as Mr. Loyal serves Orgon with an eviction notice. It is an unpleasant act that Mr. Loyal is doing but he is merely doing his job. Mr. Loyal is not wrongful in his act, other than the fact that he said “my news will make him most content.” Mr. Loyal has offered the family a day of time instead of being forced out immediately. Mr. Loyal has offered men to help in vacating the house. Mr. Loyal’s demeanor is proper and courteous.
