                                                                Free write Essay

It all started back when I walked into the 2100t ESL class. I instantly claimed that I was put in the wrong class that I should get taken out right away. I thought of the ESL class as a joke and didn’t really put my mind into it. In the beginning of class my friends and I would laugh on what we are doing in this class. When they didn’t let me switch out to a regular english class I was furious and thought that they must be joking. But at the end of the semester I realized that I learned a lot in the ESL class and had improved my writing  skill as well. We did free rights in class for every 7 minutes when class started and I can see the difference in my writing. The structure of each writing got better and better and my grammar have improved as well. As I read through my writing from day to day I can see that I am able to express feeling better in writing.

In the beginning of the semester my first free write was on “How was college so far?” As I read through the paper I wrote on how boring the college was and how the ESL class was too long. I realize a lot of grammatical errors, missing words, and lost of thought at the end. I would use the wrong “then” and “than”. The wrong “an” and “a”. When I read through the paper the words don’t flow and can’t understand what I’m reading. I would not capitalize words after a sentence and there would be some run on sentence as well. I see that I would miss words like “have” and “has” and just continue my sentences. It was hard to express my feeling on paper. When the next sentence start the next word would be lowercase instead of uppercase. There would be 3-4 lines of a sentence with no period to separate it. To the middle of the paper the writing went to something completely different. Instead of talking about college I would talk about games and friends. But into my 2nd to 3rd month of free writes I notice some changes. The sentences flows better and there would no missing words. I notice that I also capitalize each letter and there were no run on sentences. I can see there would be less grammatical error and the past and present tense was correct. It was easier to express my feeling into words. It was easier to finds the word I need in a short amount of time to write it on paper. In the beginning I would stop for like 30 second to think of the word I need to express myself but as I write more free writes it was much more easier. My thoughts was not everywhere anymore and would be focus on the specific point that I was writing about.

When I read through some of my papers some of them did surprise me. I didn’t know on some stuff I care about back then was so unnecessary. On 10/16/18 we did a free write to list out 10 things that we are worried about this semester and I wrote some funny stuff. For example like getting clothes, shoes, worried about a group member, and my weight. I was afraid that as a freshman I would gain 10 pounds because everyone says every freshman gain 10 pounds but I didn’t. I was worried for nothing about group members because the professor grades each person individually and how much work he puts into the presentation is on him not me. I was stuck on the high school mindset back then but not anymore. I am trying to get into the college mindset and focus on myself. Clothes and shoes was so unnecessary to worry about. I really love fashion and when there was a new release on a brand i had to get it. But at the end of the semester I realize that school work was more important than shoes and clothes. My writing also surprise my on how much I grew in the first semester. I would see mistake that I would never realize during the beginning of the semester. The usage of words was much easier and simpler.

During the semester I have learned a lot that I would of never going to a non ESL class. You show us on how we can fix our writing yourself just by writing 7m each day. I also see my weakness in writing and how I improved it going through the semester. I found myself more comfortable expressing my thoughts into words. I really improve my writing going through this semester but I do still need improvement on my grammar. I glad that I am able to correct myself through my own writing and able to pick out my mistakes. Now I am able to stop making run on sentences and make my sentences flow. I will use this knowledge throughout my career as I write a paper. I am glad that you can show me my mistakes professor Cambridge and able to help to get into a regular english class. Thank You!

Critical Analysis of Music Festival Article

Summary: According to the article “Behind the Music: How Music Festival Organizers Manage the Risks of Burning Man, Lollapalooza, Coachella, and More” by Emily Holbrook festivals are full of excitement but can also bring chaos and cause many accidents. People participate in dangerous and illegal substances during music festivals. The author mentions the other risks the come with organizing high risk events like music festivals. Some event organizers paid security with alcohol which made the guards drunk. One incident discusses is about an 18-year-old who ran up to the stage with a gun making threats as she was high on methamphetamines. There would be underage drinking, drug abuse, violence, and sexual abuse during the music festival. One person was stabbed multiple times, stomped on, and left to die. Some music festivals would be held for multiple days. Attendees would drink for 10-12 hours getting intoxicated going back to their tents. As no one can see them they would overdose on drugs and sexual abuse. People in tents would get run over by the intoxicated people. The number of hospitalization was on records. The next event would be the involving 50,000 people and it’s called the Burning Man. Tens of thousands of people gather together and have a week-long celebration in Nevada’s the Black Rock Desert. The people would build a giant statue that is flammable and burn it to the ground. People would celebrate by eating and dancing around the flames. But when there’s fire, there’s going to be trouble. During the summer of the festival, people would get pushed into the fire due to the poor crowd control. The attendee tried to bring this matter to the court but got rejected. The court has stated that ” it’s your own fault not protecting yourself for an event calling Burning Man.” The festival brings chaos and violence than peace and love. The lack of security guards and immense heat quickly turn the crowd into a riot mode. People will break into ATMs, loot merchandise, abandoned their vendor booths and start countless fights. There would be instanced rapes and the property damage would cost up to $1million. There are a lot of challenges with opening up Burning Man and music festival. It is a multiple day festival and people go there to lay back and have fun. But the security of the festival is very important as well. They don’t want to take the fun out of the festival by providing so many guards that make the crowd feel threatened. The guards should dress up in plain clothes so they can blend in with the others. Another challenge of this festival is the volunteer when the volunteers get hurt the festival have to pay them for their injuries. When there is a festival there are risks involved and keep them under control makes up a great festival.

Critical Analysis: According to the article, the Hell Angels are being used as security for a number of music festivals. However, the author does not mention who the Hells Angels are and does not go in depth on why they are so controversial. The author mentions that music festivals and events like Burning Man are peaceful. However, Holbrook does not state how these events are peaceful, instead describes negative aspects such as violence and drug usage. Furthermore, the author refers to music festivals with rock and roll music to be part of that so called peaceful environment, however, rock and roll can be argued as being a type of music that causes lots of excitement. Additionally, events like Burning Man are full of attendees that are naked who are burning down giant statues. Therefore, it can be argued that Burning Man is not so peaceful.

At the beginning of the article, Holbrook discusses the Alamont event but does not state if the Hells Angels are part of the chaos caused at that festival. Also, using Ben Stern to give advice to other risk managers and audience is not the best idea for the author’s argument.

The article states “Ben Stern as vice president of the California-based Heffernan Insurance Brokers, he insures the Electric Daisy Carnival, a three-day, West Coast rave notorious for illicit drug use, underage drinking and a record number of attendee hospitalizations” (Holbrook). Ben Stern was the vice president in a Electric Daisy Carnival which has multiple incidents and high levels of drug usage, accidents, and drinking.

The author also using points such as the artists and the weather being factors of high risks at events such as music festivals. However, these arguments are not relevant to the topic of the article. Artists tours and music festivals can be argued to be different. For example, if an artists cancelled their tour shows, their fans can get their money back. For music festivals there are usually multiple artists performing so attendees can enjoy the rest of the event. If the author had mentioned that artists cancelling at music festivals caused violence then it would have supported her argument. Lastly, the author does not mention the role law enforcement plays in the security of these events. It would have been interesting to know how police affects the outcomes of these types of events.

Review: The article was not successful of achieving its rhetorical goal as it doesn’t convince the reader to agree with the security options. Although the author makes good point about the danger of the lack of security, she should also consider the side of having good security. It stated that the music festival and burning festival was chaotic because of the lack of security. However, the security is not the only reason that the festival is having chaos but because people go to the festival just to get high and drunk. Extra security might not be the best option for the festival because people would stop going. In the article, it states that “Many festivals, instead of having third-party security personnel walk the grounds in uniform, will request these individuals patrol the area wearing plain clothes and blending in with the crowd” (Holbrook). This could help the security option but if you stop people doing drugs and stop people drinking people wouldn’t go to the festival and events.

Burning man and the music festivals are held for multiple days so they have to camp outside. What people do in the tents can’t be controlled by the security as it is their own privacy. Burning Man festival is a free festival and people go there to burn stuff down. If you want to protect the people the people should put fences around the fire and don’t let people go near. People in burning man is naked so how can that stop people getting rapped. The security should ban people from getting naked so there would less rape. Burning let people join for free so they can’t afford great security. It is held in a big dessert where people can enter anywhere so people can just bring in drugs and alcohol easily. The main reason people go to burning man and music festival to get drunk and get high as they are freer. If you take this privilege away from the people they would stop coming. The festivals would lose money.

                                                                       Celebration

Throughout my life, me and my family have celebrated one holiday and thats Chinese New Years or known as Spring Festival . Chinese New Year is a important holiday to us as it unite our family, it also bring us joy and happiness. Chinese New Year have a long history and filled with stories and have been celebrated throughout China. Everyone have their own version/tradition of Chinese New Year and celebrated differently based on the place you grew up in.

Chinese New Year origin started long ago in the Qing and Ming dynasty. It was a big holiday back back in the chinese history based on Asia For Education “ Through centuries of China’s agrarian tradition, this was the one period when farmers could rest from their work in the fields. Family members from near and far would travel to be with loved ones in time to usher out the old year and welcome in the new, with great celebratory flourish.” The chinese people can take days off work and reunite with their loves one and family. Chinese New Year celebration time is different every year based on the chinese calendar based on the moon. Before the  Chinese New Year celebration people would take a long time to prepare for the celebration. They have to shopping buy tones of supply for the celebration food, fireworks, red lantern, and paper money etc. Chinese New Years last for many days and each day they do something different. When the people hang up the red lantern and the red paper(Chūnlián) it’s the sign that they are ready for the New Year. It also bring good luck to the family as well as invite the good fortune to come to the house. The next day it’s time for the family reunion, family members will gather together and celebrate. When night times comes we have a big family dinner known as ( Tuányuán fàn). At this dinner family member will share stories and eat delicious food and each food have a meaning behind it. Common dishes are Dumpling, noodles, spring rolls, fish, rice cake( nianjao), and orange each of these items have a reason behind it. Dumping and spring rolls represents gold cause they look like gold bars and nuggets which means that this year you will be rich. Noodles means long life and the longer the noodle is the longer you going to live. Each new year if you have a fish dish in your table then it means that this year you will be successful same for rice( nianjao). Orange and fruits bring good fortune to the family keeping them safe. At night time family gather together and watch the night show called (Chūnjié wǎnhuì). Very late at night like 12am people go outside and start to play with there fireworks and have fun with the beautiful view. The next morning parents will starting giving red envelopes(Hóngbāo) to their kids. Chinese New Year last for 15 days the last day of the celebration is called the lantern festival. During this festival people will go and eat sweet rice ball soup(Tāngyuán). There will be a huge peraid where there will be lion dances and kind of shows. People will write their wishes and hopes into the lantern and let it run down the river. Kids will play riddles and carry paper lantern with them during the festival. When the lantern festival is over the celebration is over and people just go back to their regular lives.

There are tones of stories that family tell their kids about Chinese New Year. My grandma will tell me stories when I was little about how people started to celebrate Chinese New Year. The story would start from long ago when there was beast that comes to the village every year to terrious the village. The beast would eat everything the farmers grow and leave them with nothing left. One year a man went to praise the god and ask him for a solution to this problem. The god came down from the heaven and told the man that next time the beast comes make loud sounds, hang up a lot of red lanterns, and dress up as dragons. The villagers listen and did what the god said, the next day came and the beast have entered the village. The beast was freiten of the sounds they made with the fireworks and drums. The beast is really scared of fire and the lantern made it look like the village is on fire. When the dress up dragon came the beast was super freiten and ran for his life. Every year the villagers will put up lantern make loud sound and dress as dragons to scare of the beast and made it a celebration.

I lived in china for five years and I don’t remember much about the celebration in my hometown. Growing up in America my family have celebrate Chinese New Year as well. We take a lot time to prepare for it and have all our family member gather together. We will decorate our house with animal for the year and lucky chinese letters. We will go buy paper money for burning and tones of food. As a family we will prepare for the big feast and the kids will go out and play. We will lay out the food and before we eat the food we will put red envelopes to each dish and pray to the gods and say what we want to happen this year. We will go outside and burn paper money the reason for that is that our ancestor will have money to use. When every preparation are done then we will sit down as a family and enjoy the food and we share stories. Later the our parents will sit down and play majong and i will go watch tv shows. We can’t play with any fireworks since your not allowed to. The next morning our parents will prepare red envelopes and give them out. This is my favorite part because it’s free money.

Chinese New Year is a wonderful celebration throughout history and in my life as well. I really enjoy the tradition and our family able to gather together. Chinese New Year leave me with so many wonderful memories and bring joy into my life. We are able to spend time with family members that you haven’t seen in years and they give you the most pocket money. I really enjoy spending time as a family and be able to sit together in one dinner table and eat together.
