Free write Essay
It all started back when I walked into the 2100t ESL class. I instantly claimed that I was put in the wrong class that I should get taken out right away. I thought of the ESL class as a joke and didn’t really put my mind into it. In the beginning of class my friends and I would laugh on what we are doing in this class. When they didn’t let me switch out to a regular english class I was furious and thought that they must be joking. But at the end of the semester I realized that I learned a lot in the ESL class and had improved my writing skill as well. We did free rights in class for every 7 minutes when class started and I can see the difference in my writing. The structure of each writing got better and better and my grammar have improved as well. As I read through my writing from day to day I can see that I am able to express feeling better in writing.
In the beginning of the semester my first free write was on “How was college so far?” As I read through the paper I wrote on how boring the college was and how the ESL class was too long. I realize a lot of grammatical errors, missing words, and lost of thought at the end. I would use the wrong “then” and “than”. The wrong “an” and “a”. When I read through the paper the words don’t flow and can’t understand what I’m reading. I would not capitalize words after a sentence and there would be some run on sentence as well. I see that I would miss words like “have” and “has” and just continue my sentences. It was hard to express my feeling on paper. When the next sentence start the next word would be lowercase instead of uppercase. There would be 3-4 lines of a sentence with no period to separate it. To the middle of the paper the writing went to something completely different. Instead of talking about college I would talk about games and friends. But into my 2nd to 3rd month of free writes I notice some changes. The sentences flows better and there would no missing words. I notice that I also capitalize each letter and there were no run on sentences. I can see there would be less grammatical error and the past and present tense was correct. It was easier to express my feeling into words. It was easier to finds the word I need in a short amount of time to write it on paper. In the beginning I would stop for like 30 second to think of the word I need to express myself but as I write more free writes it was much more easier. My thoughts was not everywhere anymore and would be focus on the specific point that I was writing about.
When I read through some of my papers some of them did surprise me. I didn’t know on some stuff I care about back then was so unnecessary. On 10/16/18 we did a free write to list out 10 things that we are worried about this semester and I wrote some funny stuff. For example like getting clothes, shoes, worried about a group member, and my weight. I was afraid that as a freshman I would gain 10 pounds because everyone says every freshman gain 10 pounds but I didn’t. I was worried for nothing about group members because the professor grades each person individually and how much work he puts into the presentation is on him not me. I was stuck on the high school mindset back then but not anymore. I am trying to get into the college mindset and focus on myself. Clothes and shoes was so unnecessary to worry about. I really love fashion and when there was a new release on a brand i had to get it. But at the end of the semester I realize that school work was more important than shoes and clothes. My writing also surprise my on how much I grew in the first semester. I would see mistake that I would never realize during the beginning of the semester. The usage of words was much easier and simpler.
During the semester I have learned a lot that I would of never going to a non ESL class. You show us on how we can fix our writing yourself just by writing 7m each day. I also see my weakness in writing and how I improved it going through the semester. I found myself more comfortable expressing my thoughts into words. I really improve my writing going through this semester but I do still need improvement on my grammar. I glad that I am able to correct myself through my own writing and able to pick out my mistakes. Now I am able to stop making run on sentences and make my sentences flow. I will use this knowledge throughout my career as I write a paper. I am glad that you can show me my mistakes professor Cambridge and able to help to get into a regular english class. Thank You!
