Prior to The Art of Noise, I never really thought about sound like this being categorized as art. I can see Ocean Mysteries being played in movie scenes where the setting is the deep ocean; soundtracks in a movie are categorized as music and music is art, but I think most people tend to regard art as something more visible like drawing, painting, or dancing. Looking back on the reading, this is definitely art; it’s an amalgamation of sounds and noises that were manipulated in a way to create harmony and some sort of pleasure to the ears.
Ocean Mysteries sounds exactly like you would think it sounds. Imagine a movie that takes place in the ocean. A group of scientists are in a small submarine, roaming the dark ocean floor after losing contact with a previous group of scientists who underwent the same journey. The music is quite low in pitch and has a dark timbre. Reverbs are prominent in this music, adding to the mysterious and almost scary quality of the piece. All the deep sounds strike some chord of fear within me but funnily enough, I am drawn to it. I actually really enjoyed listening to this piece by Bertoia. I clicked on a couple of the other artists’ work before landing here but every piece that I listened to was similar to Girl Talk; they were all populated with noise, one after the other or one on top of another and it was very disorienting. It felt like I was at a club or a huge social setting which I am not fond of. I definitely prefer a piece like Ocean Mysteries over those.
