Reading Response – The Medium is the Message

“When this circuit learns your job, what are you going to do?” This has been a growing conversation in the past decade, mainly due to the constant development and improvement of AI. It’s a double-edged sword for sure. On one hand, I think it’s great that we can use technology in a way to lessen the burden on ourselves as humans, but on the other hand, it’s taking away our livelihoods. Of course, it’s a more layered conversation than just blaming technology for taking away our livelihoods – in the first place, why are our livelihoods tied down to a single job? Personally, it brings into question human existence in general. We are the species with the highest complexity, yet we have formed our societies around productivity. There will always be someone that counters with the argument “But if you’re not productive and don’t make money, how will you survive?” That’s the issue; why is our survival dependent on productivity in jobs/life? There are BILLIONS of humans in this world and we are all expected to excel in our jobs and be productive 24/7, for what? To earn the approval of our bosses? What is that going to do? It’s all superficial in my head; we should only be living for ourselves, not for whatever society has deemed “necessary” today.

I went on a little tangent but that’s what the excerpt reminded me of. It’s concerning that AI has the potential to take over jobs, but why don’t we create a more sustainable way of life, one that doesn’t revolve around slaving away for corporations and companies, so that we can exist in harmony with AI “doing our jobs”.
