Art statement
I did not have any background knowledge of visual and media arts, before taking the new media art class. Whenever I visit the museums, I prefer watching the classic paintings of modern art and Renaissance. I thought that the movies and television programs is all of the media arts. However, Pippolotti Rist and Ryan Trecartin’s media arts in class time were kind of shocking to me. They used the camera as a medium to passionately express themselves. I have never had a chance to watch and learn about media art before. I hope that the class help to cultivate my visual creative and develop the visual experience about media art.
My art is based on the “The Scream” of Edvard Munch. Some commentator interpreted the main figure as inner feeling of Munch with unspeakably fear. The Scream has been symbol of loneliness or agony for long time. Therefore, there are lots of reproduced pieces and memes based on the art on the Internet. People put themselves in the art instead of the main figure to express their loneliness or agony. Unlike others’ attempt, I put myself next to main figure. My intention was to express that I try to release his anxiety and share his painful memory by standing next to him. I changed the entire dark colors in the art to brighter colors for better mood. The Abstract arts with randomly positioned rectangles inspired me, so I laid and piled a lot of rectangles on my figure in art. Each color of the rectangles in my body is my trials of adjustments that I learn about Photoshop in the class. One thing I am worried is that it look like I scary the figure and the figure try to avoid me in the work unlike my intention.
