Life’s a Journey

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

  • Many characters in James Baldswin’s work have faced challenges, that has stemmed from their fear to change their reality.  It seems as if these characters are afraid to start a new journey and not being able to accomplish it.  However, Baldwin in many cases demonstrates that we must rid ourselves from this idea and go for what we think is right.  You are never going to know what you can accomplish if you try it, you have to take that first step no matter how long the journey is.  I’ve personally learned through my life experiences, that you don’t know if you can do something unless you try it first.  Taking that single step at the end can only help you grow and make you a better person.  Especially, the characters in Baldwin’s stories, which seem to have nothing else to lose.

  1. I absolutely agree with you and Baldwin. You will never know unless you try. The best example I can come up with on the top of my head is, Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. He attempted 1000 times before he succeeded. People should follow their heart and never doubt themselves. What I have learned through my experience is to never give up in what you believe in, and as long as you don’t quit and keep going, the closer you are to your goal. If you fail and fall, you are already down, there is nowhere else to go but up. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

I also completely agree with you guys. Baldwin was a pioneer in his own right. He was a Black man writing about gay White men in the 1950’s. Back then that was an extremely bold move. On top of that he was not afraid to speak his mind, he was able to bring the conversation of racial injustice into everyone’s homes through his novels and essays. He definitely was a man on a mission, and he is considered one of the best of his craft because he followed his gut and never gave in.
