Artist Statement (Revised)

Now familiar with various new media art tools, James Matsis sees polarity in our world and expresses it with a mix of media technology and music.  Adding audio to the art brings another dimension and an a more comprehensive interpretation of the experience.  I portray emotions, irony and even humor with a side of shock. Throughout my now slightly experienced role as a new media artist, the work will relay my messages in a creative, unique way, so I wish to share my experiences with my audience.  With more experience and experimentation I believe the art will convey my statement even clearer and dramatic.

Inspiration is still the same; massive information input and humanity’s outputs.  Individual lives are extremes, with periods of relaxation and enjoyment and then stress and disappointment.  Anger and Happiness, Love and Hate, Black and White, Death and Birth, Noise and Silence.  These polarities are what I try to bring into my new media art.

Artist Statement

A fresh face in the art scene, I, James Matsis examine our world of extremes, its inequalities and their outcomes using today’s media technology, illustrations and modified photographs. I want to artistically show what my eyes see, my brain thinks, my heart feels in these events. I will try to portray emotions, irony and even humor with a side of shock. Throughout my new role as a new media artist, the work will relay my messages in a creative, unique way, so I wish to share my experiences with my audience.

Inspiration comes from exposure and my interpretations of it. We get massive amounts of information, news and stories about these extremes daily. I think how our humanity has evolved and devolved throughout our slight time on Earth and how these extremes manifested. Also, I do like the notion of combinations, hybrids and multi-purpose use from single things, like Swiss Army knives, sofa-beds, and combination appetizer platters when I can’t decide on what to eat. This draws inspiration to combine two events into one piece of art. Examples like the CEOs that make 1000% more than his company’s employees, fast and hard gentrification in New York City neighborhoods, and violent reactions to mild annoyances are some examples. I walk by homeless people sitting on the floors of Madison Avenue and SoHo and witness middle-class workers waiting in line to purchase $6 coffees and artisanal teas. There are worn-down automobiles in the projects with $1500 chrome wheels and stereo systems. It’s all kind of funny, sometimes.
