Evaluation of social platform.(Cognitive Surplus)

As Clay Shirky mentioned, internet really is a new way for us to publish and express our ideas and concerns just like the south Korea’s demonstration was a serious issues and people explore their concern through the internet caused many young teenage girls to get involved a serious political issue. People now gather information more quickly and able to watch the news worldwide. It also developed many new industry to make life easier than few hundreds years ago. The example of “PickupPal” was a really effective way for those who has been struggling with transportation to their work, school or others. Social network has really provided enough information quickly and although its a virtual world, it solves real world problem. Of course that increase in quantity reduces the quality of work itself but it also provide more wildly alternative for people with various interest. There’re still many good things to read and study on the internet as long as people put tome efforts on search. I really like then Clay Shirky mentioned that ” Diversity expands the range of the possible, and the best work becomes better than what went before.” 51  This is true as a fact. The social network became a tool that people created event to change the way “public conversation unfolded and found they had the opportunity to do so”. The chapter three “Motive” has provided many evidences about  that people put a lot of effort on what interested to them. People do things they love not asking for anything reward. Many Facebook users love it and it is the key for them to success. Facebook’s network effect comes froms user itself. No one asked them to do it and they do it without pay.  just like the “Josh Groban Foundation”  People put their effort and time just for loving it.

Unity is strength

Today, there’re more people on the facebook than they were on the plant two hundred years ago. Humanity’ greatest desire is to belong and connect. The powerful of the technology is just like a magic that shines our daily life and connect all of us. We see each other, we hear each other, we share what we love and it reminds us about what we all have in common.  Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, and so on and on…  This connection is changing the way the world works.

Nothing is miserable though the internet. The more wonderful thing is that we make the internet even more powerful than ever.  This is a free encyclopedia tool that made by us. Its 21 million articles have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world.  People share their ideas, their knowledge and people can learn from it or edit to it. This is the power if unity. It can’t be done by one person or small groups. People visit the site and write something on it, others see it and edit their opinion or ideas to it.

After i read “Collective Action And Institutional Challenge” by Clay Shirky, i realized how powerful the people as a whole. It reminds me the film about “KNOY 2012”  The film’s purpose is to promote the charity’s ‘Stop Kony’ movement to make indicted Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony internationally known in order to arrest him in 2012.  They created group call “Invisible Children” just the “VOTF”. They started with few people and now has millions of members through all the world. The Invisible Children charity has focused on obtaining the support of a select group of individuals in order to “help bring awareness to the horrific abuse and killing of children in the East and Central African countries at the hands of Kony and his leadership” They are invincible because of the collective action.  Most of the members are young generation and they are the “army” who fight for the children who are suffering in Ugandan. In October 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that he would send 100 American military advisors to Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to help the regional forces remove Joseph Kony “from the battlefield”.  What a powerful community it is. This is what i mean “Unity is strength”

Information Super Highway

There’s one thing that very interested to me which is anything that innovated  to connected people from each other must be a very successful business. Just take a look at our history, paper letter, Telegraph, radio, Television, Telephone and today’s social network website such as Facebook. The book mentioned that human are socialized species and that’s our instinct.

We share billions of information through the internet everyday which means we can almost know everything that is going on in the world. Just imaging what would Ivanna do without internet?  She probably give up that phone already. The social network is very powerful today because millions of people are on the site that they see it, they hear it and they share it. In mathematical way to calculate the number of shares, we can see that since one people see it and share it to another one and go on to the infinite people 2^99 . Therefore the information will explore in any moment. That’s sounds scary that we are no longer be able to keep our privacy because of the power of the network.

Some people call the internet “Information Super Highway”  as the whole of the world that is in constant transition. For example, that the one week’s contents on the NewYorkTimes is far exceed one person’s entire life from seventeen century. The Internet drives the hottest stocks on Wall Street, shapes technological innovation, and fills the pages of the world’s presses. The book mentioned from the chapter two that people were managing their business and collect data by their hand. It’s must be time consuming and need a lot of people to do the work. In today, we only need few professionals and few managers to do the work in the much easier way.

Today, internet  allows us to do research, pay bills, find old friends, new friends, look for jobs and so much more. The Internet has certainly made the world a smaller place by getting more information to more people. However, there’re also many controversy questions. Even though internet brings many changes,  what does those changes mean for society, government, commerce, and other institutions? How will the way we live, work, learn, profit, govern, and communicate? Is that good or bad for our next generation? and our future ?

Privacy and Government

After the 911 terrorist attacked New York, the national safety has became a serious and a major issue for the U.S government. We can say that millions of us may in dangerous at any moment. These two video has one thing in common which is government is trying to get all the information from each of us in oder to prevent other tragedy happen in the future.

I dont say which side is right or the other side is wrong . Each side has their own reasons. As we are living in a technology booming age, that our personal information may no longer private anymore. For every click on the internet, every website we visit, we disclosure our personal information unconsciously. Of course we want our information be private but it seems much more difficult than ever in human history. Not only the government, but there’re many other firms such as financial firms, marketing firms are tracking our personal information to increase their business. This is not an issue anymore.

Moreover, the government collect our data just for protecting citizens in the U.S. There’s a sentence call ” Rather to get 1000killed than go get one missed.” Even though they may violate the law of privacy, their purpose is harmless. Government not like any other marketing firms just get our information to make money.
