There is a big difference in emphasis between Homer and Sappho. Odysseus focuses more on the portrayal of the two heroes in the Trojan War, describing the hardships of wandering on the sea for ten years and Odyssey’s love for his companions, family, and hometown, portraying an anti-hero for us. However, Sappho’s description of love is more focused on the feelings between homosexuals. With love and desire as the main themes, we can feel Sappho’s expression of the bitterness of brokenhearted sadness in the poem.
The poetic forms of affection are crisp and crisp, more elegant to read, and the language is more simple and straightforward. Sometimes her poetry resembles the Romantic period’s lyrics, using nature’s landscapes to symbolize her subtle moods. In most cases, metaphors are used to describe an object, but represent one’s state of mind or alluding to someone. Sappho used the skill of poetry to enrich the image and inner meaning of poetry. Sappho’s poetry made me more empathetic and appealing than Odysseus’s. At the same time, it will lead to more thinking. The meaning behind the words describes what kind of feelings she has. This is also different from Homer, who USES more similes. In the Odyssey, both the description of the scenery and the description of the characters’ actions are written vividly, as if everything happened in front of the eyes.
