Based on the reading “The Principle of New Media”, it is clear that media has changed drastically through out the years and that creates a clear distinction between old and new media in society. What really stood out to me was the Variabilities of the new media and how it can exist in different type of forms, potentially infinite versions up to ones imaginations.1357163125-kk-installation

Old media art would involve a human creator that creates media in a particular type of composition or sequence for one to follow. This sequence would in some material, in order determined once and for all.Numerous copies could run off from the master and with the logic of the industrial society, all of the copies will be identical. New media art in contrast values in variability. Rather than having identical copies, a new media would be created in different versions. The versions are assembled by computer instead of by the humans. Which makes variability a principle that is very similar to automation. Under program control, media elements maintain their separate identities  and can be assembled in numerous sequences. A very good example showing the method of variation is the use of “distancing” or “level of detail” in interactive virtual worlds such as VRML scenes. The designers would create models of the same object, each with progressively less details. When the virtual camera is close to the object, a highly detailed model would be used, if it is farther, a less detailed model will automatic be used.

In my opinion, ” Variations” would connect to people who are opening blogs and pages about themselves and sharing it to the media world. It shows that people have variations and have a different look in the society that we live in. Although we might look at the same objects, walk the same streets and breathe the same air, we can feel and express our emotions about our surroundings differently. Thats the beauty of the new media arts today.
