Body Shaming in China
3. The Influence of Social Media
Social media influences how women view their body both positively and negatively. The article published in Jing Daily by Jennifer Zhuang states the Italian clothing brand Brandy Melville becomes popular in the Chinese Media because it was promoted by K-pop star Black Pink. The hashtag #TestIfYouCanRocTheBMStyle, along with the BM girl ideal Weight Chart is spread in the media. The brand was designed for the skinny girl because it only offers one size. The BM style was once popular in western culture because of the influence of celebrities and movies(Zhuang, 2020). Because of the widespread social media about the BM Style, women feel the pressure put on them and start to question themselves. This causes them to practice unhealthy weight control behavior or any non-scientific way to lose weight. In addition, women engage in “ fat talk” because they feel insecure. The author also gives examples of body positivity. There was a brand that tried to address the stereotype about women and they present a 14 minutes documentary which tells about the stereotype women face(Zhuang,2020). Body positivity should be encouraged and practiced in China because the dissatisfaction of body shape negatively impacts women’s mental health.
