Summary. – When I think of videogames, I usually think of the classic games that I played when I was a kid. I usually think of all the sleepless hours I spent trying to beat this games. The concept of a “good game” may vary for person to person that plays video games. But, in my mind a good game is an idea that is introduced to the player. This idea has to be “captivating and hypnotic” from the very beginning of the story of the game to the mechanics that help you defeat the game. In my personal experience there were a few video games that fit this description and became classic games back in the 80’s and 90’s. With that in mind, I tried to create a simple survival game (and I know that there are plenty out there). But my idea was based on personal experience with other games and I tried to translate those feelings into this game.
Inspiration. – In the 80’s and 90’s there was a ‘little’ game known as Pac-Man and the first time I saw it I was mesmerized by it. My first thought was; how did I not know about this already. I felt like my world had changed dramatically. And then a few days later I found Mario Bros. and my mind exploded(figuratively). One of my first thoughts after I stopped freaking out of course was “who invented this”, and “how can a world like this exist”. I was introduced to video games at a very young age and I can say that throughout my entire life there has not been one day that was boring. Now, if I can just transfer just a little bit of those feelings into the game I create, then I can say with certainty that I would’ve succeeded.
Research. – My research process was very simple and very educational. Most of the things I needed to know were basically in the tutorial provided by the Unity’s website. My first step was to look for an environment where the player was able to tell what kind of game it is. For example, if the player spawns at a place where there is a lot of trees and grass, the player assumes immediately that this is an adventure game. Another example could be something like a map full of stairs and taps and things that kills the character then the player assumes that this is a survival game. So, the game I tried to create something like the second one but without the traps. The first thing that the player sees is basically a room with stairs and ramps that give the impression that it takes place only in this room.
Process. -During the process of building a game from scratch artists have to figure out many things at once. For example, when I first started to create something from scratch, I couldn’t focus on one thing at the time. I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but all the ideas came at once, so I didn’t know how to even start. I then decided to make a list of the steps that I need to do, in order to complete my task. After trial and error, I found myself building something (slowly but surely).
