The Art Of Noise

The Art Of Noise

When people think about noise they usually think about sounds that are unwanted or disruptive. But noises, when put together in a certain way, such that they are pleasing to the ear are very enjoyable indeed. On the book “The Art of Noise” by Luigi Russolo, he talks about the art that can be made by using different types of noise. He also gives us a little bit of information about how people are predisposed to certain noises that would cause them to be bored or bothered by. As an example he talks about how people find more “pleasure within a combination of sounds of trolleys, autos and other vehicles rather than listening once more the pastoral symphonies.” This is actually a good example of how people’s brains work, in regards to sound. Think about this for a moment! When people experience a good time, they attach sounds smells and colors to that moment and save it as a pleasant memory. The opposite is also true; when you’re having a bad time your brain will also save that as a memory. So, in the future those memories can be triggered and summoned by using certain sounds smells or colors. The point that I am trying to make with this illustration is that sounds can be attached to either pleasant memories or unpleasant ones but in the end whatever sounds good for one person might not sound good to another. Finally, the word “noise” can be subjective and it can be a noise to some people but it can be a symphony to others.

This sound was very interesting to me, and it made think of n64 games =) http://www.ubu.com/sound/guy.html
