In the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn many of the local hispanic natives have been forced to leave due to the rising cost of living. The cost of living has gone up due to the new apartment complex located on 36th street and 3rd avenue. Sunset Park spans from 68th street to 38th street between 3rd and 7th avenue. This is not the first time that the neighborhood is being gentrified. Before Sunset Park was predominately Italian and Irish American immigrant families. The community is torn because many people believe it will make a positive impact, while others believe that it’s making a negative impact because it will change the neighborhood completely and it just won’t be the same.
Hispanics make up 79% of the sunset park area. What makes this so upsetting is that the majority of the people being effected are families and the majority of these families consist of young children.Sunset Park is a very family oriented neighborhood. In the summer months you can see how crowded and congested the streets are with families out shopping and playing in the park. You can see this happen on 5th avenue also known as “la quinta” to the residents of the neighborhood. This is a very tight knit community where everyone has each others backs. It’s a shame that so many people are having to leave because of the cost of rent going up.
