The Hunters Point Community Library open by the summer of 2017. It is currently under construction in the Gantry Plaza State Park of Long Island City. Once complete, it will share the iconic roles of the famous “Pepsi-Cola” and “Long Island” signs as pieces representing Long Island City’s waterfront. The building was structured by Steven Holl Architects, and has a unique design, distinctive to the firm’s artistic style.

The library is 22,000 square-feet. It is box-shaped with large angling windows. The dull concrete walls will be painted over with an aluminum finish. The interior of the building will have books for readers of all ages, along with reading space nearby the windows for a nice view. The roof will have a garden and seating for readers who want to relax outside.

This addition to Long Island City’s community will provide a beneficial public space. However, despite the positivity it will bring, the abstract piece raises questions of whether or not it was placed or designed appropriately in accordance with other buildings around it.
This is a matter of varying artistic tastes, especially since the library will become a prominent piece to the Gantry skyline and a possible look at what may become of Long Island City’s infrastructure.
