Taking the Law Into Their Own Hands

An interesting and gripping photo-slideshow about villagers in Mexico who have taken the law “into their own hands” standing up against criminal groups and federal authorities. The photos are definitely helping in telling this story, as seeing the villagers lifestyle of “self-rule” gives you a much deeper understanding of the situation than if just reading about it. The photos helps to wake emotion and makes the story more memorable.

Audio Slide Show

Walking the world’s megacities: hiking across New York – audio slideshow

The idea of someone walking from JFK to Harlem sounds quite crazy, and an audio slide show documenting this experience was definitely something that I had to see. And it was definitely an interesting feature – I think the pictures and the audio worked well together keeping me interested during the whole slide-show. The combination of narration and sounds from the streets and events taking place in the pictures was a great way to make the story flow, and to engage the listener. My only problem with this slide show was the abrupt ending, where I think some sort of “final words” should have been said.

Video

Super Bowl predictions and winning recipes

This video combined a sport-analyst prediction of the Super Bowl game with a demonstration on good game-day food. I think this is something that video’s are good for; combining two different stories about the same theme and presenting them together. An article about the actual game and about food would just have been confusing, but in a video the transition between the two subjects is much smoother, as the narrator can tell the viewer what will be shown next. It is like a little “Super Bowl package” in which one gets a brief info on the game, and a brief look into what a great Super Bowl food-spread could be.

Interactive Feature

A Year at War

An in-depth look at the life and journey of soldiers in Afghanistan. The New York Times did a great job in compiling this interactive feature, which has so much different content, all coming together creating a touching story about the life of these soldiers. Audio slide shows and videos are both used well to make the reader/viewer connect with the soldiers and making each story feel very personal. One issue I have with this feature is that there is so much content that it can get a little overwhelming to browse trough, and hard to remember what contend one have already seen and what not.
