Detroit’s Beautiful, Horrible Decline”

Two French photographers were able to capture the magnificent beauty in a city full of dilapidation. This is not a simple task and would not have been possible to fully describe solely in words. The eleven photographs in this slideshow, along with their captions, tell a vivid story.

This format allowed the journalist to narrate his journey from JFK to Harlem, while simultaneously showing photographs of the people and places he encountered. The use of musical interludes, maps, and interviews helped to paint a vivid picture of the trek.

Video

“Tearing Down After Sandy”

The use of video was necessary in this case to show the surreal act of demolishing homes. Actually being able to see a house get ripped apart provides the emotional connection to the homeowners who are also interviewed in this video report. The video made the devastation of Sandy very personal.

Interactive feature

A 3.8 Billion-Pixel Tour of Mount Everest”

For those of us who may never get to see Mount Everest with our own eyes, photographer David Breashears has compiled hundreds of images into one huge interactive “gigapan” that allows viewers to explore the Himalayan region in an interactive way. He has matched vintage photos of specific peaks and glaciers with modern photos, allowing for a unique look at the changes that have occurred over time. When this project is complete, there will be audio and video incorporated in the interactive image, which will only add to the educational possibilities.
