Final Project Update

This past weekend I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to a homeless veteran, someone who gave me the idea for my new final project. In our brief talk a few blocks away from Penn Station, I was able to find out that his name is Nigel (though most call him Sarge) and he had recently come back from the war in Iraq where he worked as a high-ranking officer in Special Operations. He had been shot twice which is why he was released from the war. After sharing some of his gruesome experiences, my boyfriend and I asked where he would be staying that night. He shared that he was debating whether to go back to a homeless shelter on Borden Avenue in Long Island City. He was hesitant because he was “sick of being roped into another debate about drone strikes.” I found this intriguing and am hoping to be able to talk to more homeless veterans at Borden Avenue or at a veteran’s support group to shed more light on the homelessness and trauma they deal with after coming back from war.
