Photo Gallery: World’s Best Hikes: Epic Trails
I love that this gallery is long and variable, with thumbnails that allow you to decide if you want to skip ahead. Ample text and information about each image is provided, but if the viewer has no interest in the text, they can completely ignore it. Also, the transition from one image to another is smooth, it’s nice to be able to load a new page without losing your positioning from the last one and just one feature that makes the gallery successful.
Audio Slideshow: One in 8 Million
This New York Times audio slideshow allows users to select from over 50 brief interviews with all kinds of New Yorkers, during which tidbits of wisdom, slices of street smarts and just plain good stories are shared. The presentation is really clean and enjoyable, and I like that the interviews are short.
Video: The Last Word with Art Buchwald
In The Last Word, the New York Times gives individuals of note the opportunity to create a sort of video obituary where they discuss their life. Art Buchwald’s Last Word is particularly humorous. The video effectively incorporates moving images, still photos (old and new) and voice overs.
Interactive Feature: 512 Paths to the White House
This is one of many election-related interactive pages put together by the New York Times. It’s great because it makes the very complicated election process slightly easier to grasp by allowing viewers to see how various victories and losses might affect the final election outcomes.
