Welcome to the official blog for the Fall 2024 Harman Writer-In-Residence course, taught by journalist and author Eyal Press. Immigration, abortion, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the politics of race: reporters often wade into subjects that are polarizing and divisive. What are the peculiar challenges of writing about such issues? How can journalists write about them in a way that is evenhanded? Is being evenhanded always desirable – or even possible? And how might a writer’s personal experiences and political opinions shape his or her approach? In this course, students will be exposed to the work of reporters who have navigated these questions in different ways. They will be trained to think about the advantages and drawbacks of different styles of writing and different approaches to divisive subjects from polemical essays to dispassionate inquiries to journalism that incorporates personal history and memoir.
