The Garment District in its Prime

A new clothing cycle was created which still exists today of constantly changing styles to go along with upcoming seasons. Showrooms showed fashions from Europe which changed every six months. By 1910, it was estimated that about 70% of all the clothing worn in the United States originated in the Garment District.

When the World Wars broke out , the Garment District was cut off from the European fashions it had depended on. This forced the American designers to try new silhouettes and fashions. This lead to the distinct American fashion of the 1940’s.

In the 1970’s the Garment District hit the peak of its economic and cultural influence. It was almost like it’s own self sustaining ecosystem and seemed to function seamlessly through the fashion seasons.
