Final project

New Media VS. Old media

Final Project Sequal

As a group we discussed the first part, we decided to create a video that establishes how society was before social media. We shot the video on Friday. After Habeeb edited it, we think that we need more scenes for a better ending. So, we met up again yesterday on Sunday and shot some more scenes. And now I think our video seems pretty appropriate and amazing with just a bit of funny-ness. I just finished my essay and will be looking forward to attending our final class for today.

This was a amazing time and I learned a lot more then I think I would in CIS 3810.

Final Assignment

In my group its Habeeb, Aidel and I we are in formation to do the final project as a group. We decided to create a movie that establishes how society was before social media. As a group we designed to establish the differentiation between the expansion of social media and before the expansion of social media through our film. We will also include the current state of our society with the expansion of social media. Each person will represent a period of social media. Throughout the weekend, we talked about how we are going to do it. So far we have gathered the theme and talked about the script. Because we all have different schedule, we are planning to shoot it this week.

My fun Spring break

The topic i choose was pretty much all sarcasm. This week was by far the most difficult week of my semester, not because of hard classes but because of adjustment issues. Over spring break, I didn’t do much and was very cranky. All I did mostly was sitting around at home even at work. What was weird was that I didn’t know what to do with my time once spring break had begun; I walked around in a daze for about 3 hours thinking to myself “wow I didn’t realize how much time was in a day” My mom told me to get out of the house and hang out with my friends but I said there was nothing to do, also she did find out about my face book which I’m not suppose to have due to some situation with my cousin, So I had to deactivate that for the moment, other than that my spring break was okay but I’m hoping next time it will be better like I know my summer will because I am going to California to visit my cousins .And when summer comes I’ll be a ball of sunshine. That’s something I’m sure of.

Rethink and change this beautiful world for better place!

I completely see eye to eye with Jay Rosen’s ideas of us, the audience, having command over the production of the media content we take in. Now that technology has extended, we can access information faster and easier. Not only is it faster and easier, we can be in charge of what type of information is being put on air.

NY1 – helpline is very similar to New York City’s 311 helpline system but with more publicity and projections for public. As 311 registers the complain and puts it in a work order format before sending it to the concerned agency. There is no particular system as to follow up on it.

Last summer we (my community) faced an immense issue on one of the intersections near a community park for neighborhood children – vehicles passing from that intersection were flying by (speeding more than 30 mph) for a local street – very often there were instances of when kids were scared to play in the park because of the intersection right next to it. In a community meeting it was decided that a stop sign is needed for this intersection and this issue will be taken to the city through 311 calls. About 3 weeks of reporting this to city via 311 there was no action taken – then our community informed NY1 help hotline about this situation – they showed a brief documentary of it on television and next week we saw DOT putting up a sign on it. This shows the power of media.

Another matter came to light when numerous drivers were complaining about severely bad conditions on the MTA bridges – RFK bridge – there were numerous pot holes on the roadway on the bridge itself which made it worse for driver during winter with snow and sleet – the conditions on the roadways were unsafe – a lot of complains were given to MTA about this from several drivers and no results were seen. After which a number of them put this through NY1 hotline – which made a documentary of the unsafe conditions of the roads – within two weeks there were improvements and MTA roads division was working on it. Another example of the power of media.

Jay Rosen, in his blog titled “The People Formerly Known as the Audience,” presents really interesting informations about how the people that he refers as “formerly known as the audience” have taken control of the game

who’s top speed now tuff boy!

Runners in olympics may need some support. Sometimes brain overcomes strength. This was super easy to design and i actually had a good laugh while collaborating this awesome picture. Now i think i will keep making images like these and posting them on the web just so everyone else can have a good time looking at them.

This was fun and really funny, I enjoyed. Shirky was precise, it’s a good feeling to be in charge of what I build and organize for publication, and is an enhanced feeling people would smile once they see this image.I chose this image because I was watching Discovery Channel and on the show “Wild Cats” they showed how out of 8 to 10 times when the lion chases down his prey, he/she accomplish it with a blink of an eye. I took 30 minutes to find and alter the images, since I knew that I was looking for an image of a lion that’s on the way to catch its prey and Google made it look easy found a picture that was with a lion running and the prey on his Ducati Bike showing how brain overcomes power and I also thought it was pretty funny!

-Got the picture

-Went to www.memegenerator.net

-Uploaded the picture

-Wrote the captions which I chose to write

-Boom! There it was got the picture

T.V. in Demand leading to Problems

Most kids plug into the world of television long before they enter school.

Certainly, TV in moderation can be a good thing Preschoolers can obtain knowledge in alphabet on public TV, and parents can keep up with present events on the evening news. No doubt about it .TV can be an excellent mentor and entertainer.

Shirky points out that “Americans watch roughly two hundred billion hours of TV every year” I strongly accept it true. Regardless of its advantages, too much television can be harmful I have experienced this because when I came to this country in 2001 we bought a huge TV in the beginning totally loved it sat in front of it watched nearly all TV shows on TNT, played games but in the long run I started to notice I was become fat because of sitting in front of tv all day eating and eating. i started to lose connection from the outside world I was scared to talk in public because I didn’t have a huge social life. TV kept me busy thinking “oh I know everything that’s going on I’m so up to date” but was losing my self confidence to talk in public and leading towards obesity. Thank god! I realized and started avoiding television went to the gym lost 60 pounds and now I’m quite fit!

For the future I will not let this situation happen with my kids and hopefully everyone learns and not let this occur with them or their loved ones. Too much of anything is bad for you both physically and mentally

The Microsoft Excel Tutorial

Microsoft Excel is an electronic spreadsheet. You can use it to organize your data into rows and columns. You can also use it to perform mathematical calculations quickly.

As a tutor, I would start with basics of excel which is to learn spreadsheet;

So let’s get started digging into what makes a spreadsheet work. Spreadsheets are made up of

  • columns
  • rows
  • and their intersections are called cells

In each cell there may be the following types of data

  • text (labels)
  • number data (constants)
  • formulas (mathematical equations that do all the work)
  • In a spreadsheet the COLUMN is defined as the vertical space that is going up and down the window. Letters are used to designate each COLUMN’S location.

Worksheets

Microsoft Excel consists of worksheets. Each worksheet contains columns and rows. The columns are lettered A to Z and then continuing with AA, AB, AC and so on; the rows are numbered 1 to 1,048,576.

The Formula Bar

If the Formula bar is turned on, the cell address of the cell you are in displays in the Name box which is located on the left side of the Formula bar. Cell entries display on the right side of the Formula bar. If you do not see the Formula bar in your window, perform the following steps:

  1. Choose the View tab.
  2. Click Formula Bar in the Show/Hide group. The Formula bar appears.

EXERCISE 1

Move Around the Worksheet

The Down Arrow Key

  • Press the down arrow key several times. Note that the cursor moves downward one cell at a time.

The Up Arrow Key

  • Press the up arrow key several times. Note that the cursor moves upward one cell at a time.

The Tab Key

  1. Move to cell A1.
  2. Press the Tab key several times. Note that the cursor moves to the right one cell at a time.

The Shift+Tab Keys

  • Hold down the Shift key and then press Tab. Note that the cursor moves to the left one cell at a time.

The Right and Left Arrow Keys

  1. Press the right arrow key several times. Note that the cursor moves to the right.
  2. Press the left arrow key several times. Note that the cursor moves to the left.

Page Up and Page Down

  1. Press the Page Down key. Note that the cursor moves down one page.
  2. Press the Page Up key. Note that the cursor moves up one page.

The Ctrl-Home Key

  1. Move the cursor to column J.
  2. Stay in column J and move the cursor to row 20.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key while you press the Home key. Excel moves to cell A1.

Go To Cells Quickly

The following are shortcuts for moving quickly from one cell in a worksheet to a cell in a different part of the worksheet.

I hope this tutorial gives the right and adequate info to learn the very basics for excel for CIS 3810 class.

Manovich’s Variability

Manovich portrays in one of his five principles of new media that variability is “a new media object it is not something fixed once and for all, but something that can exist in different, potentially infinite versions” To better explain the idea of variability, he compares old media to new media. Unlike old media, new media does not change structure and content together.

He interprets that you can take a piece and control it in a way from the original type that it differs by using other values to change the effect of the original, an example of variability would be how photos can be resized using zoom in and zoom out.

My understanding of something that contains variability is how the different versions of Microsoft Word that was first created in 1983 Multi-Tool Word for Xenix systems now has evolved into more complex versions as it progressed and changed the effect of original and currently latest version is Microsoft Office 2012.

I agree with Manovich principle of Variability. Things that can be prearranged in distinctive format and structures, delivering the user with different outcomes.

Pro’s & Con’s of Social Networking Sites

People who are usually shy or not outspoken can use social networking as a type of shield to overcome that. Social networking is a platform, rather more a site that concentrates on building and reflecting of social networks.

Big business use Facebook as means of attracting customers educating the public about their services and you can use this to your advantage when looking for a job, in term as of your career research the company get to see what their culture is like that’s the potential for you.

I started using Facebook as a means of staying connected and not only have you been in touch with friends but I have expanded professional contacts as well. I found an engineering firm through Facebook and was scheduled an interview on the phone and then in person luckily I got appointed for the job and now earning a decent salary, but you have to be cautious what you put out there it can greatly influence your image based on what you put out there even if you don’t mean for that to happen because of stalkers, spams and etc. Limiting personal information also helps.

Some of the Cons of social networking sites that I faced were the first thing i did was when I turned the laptop on would go to Facebook and spend hours on it, due to this habit. I lacked going to the gym put on additional pounds, also stopped reading books and spend less and less time with family, eventually started to fiddle off in school work. Finally when I realized my mistakes so I temporary deactivated my Facebook account and focused in everything else, learned how to manage my time and responsibility so I was able to activate my account and since everything has worked out fine.
