Growing up in St John’s, Antigua. I feel like Jamaica Kincaid grew up in a traditional home. Where women are suppose to be house wives and learn to be a women at a young age. This still exist, but not much in the United States. My mom till this day nags at the fact that i am 23 and can’t cook a decent meal besides tacos and other simple things. When she was 23 she already had my two older sisters and obviously knew how to cook. She always tells me that she was forced to learn how to cook at a young age while her mother and brothers worked.
I feel that Jamaica wrote this short story because this was maybe what she learned at a young age and is just telling the story the way she was told. I just feel that a women is someone who can keep a home and know how to cook, but its 2012 more women are working and men should learn how to cook and clean too!! Maybe I can write a book called “Men” =D
