“A Room of One’s Own” almost overwhelmed and turned me off with the narrator’s initial rambling about her trespassing. But then as I continued reading, the story jump started my imagination and made me thought about the numerous “what if” scenarios. What if laws were created more equally? What if women had more money at their disposal? What if the “patriarchs” didn’t state their opinions but instead truth and facts? What if the talents and potentials of women were nurtured and fostered by society? Surely, society would be vastly different, if not substantially better. Think of Hillary Clinton, Helen Keller, Oprah Winfrey, or Rosa Parks and drastic impacts they’ve had or still have on society.
On another note, the stories of Woolf and Kinkaid got me thinking about the reversal of gender roles. What would our society be like if women were in the position of power throughout history? Would men be categorized as the “protected sex”? How would men approach the issue of obtaining equality? I wonder what the class may think about these questions.
