Kincaid

Kincaid’s “Girl” is something that I feel like many girls can identify with. Growing up, our mother’s are usually over protective of us. They teach us how to become proper young ladies and they make sure that we do not send out the “wrong message”. They tell us what we need to do and tell us what we should not do. These values are passed down from generation to generation of most woman who grew up in a very cultured household.

Kincaid’s “Girl” does exactly this. The mother is telling the daughter what she should and should not do as a young lady. She tries to teach her what a proper you lady should be. This text is all advice the mother is giving the daughter as she is growing up. She stressing the fact that her daughter must and must not do certain things that would make her a “slut”. The question is, do you find the mother to be teaching her this with good intentions or is this just overbearing? Do mothers’ put too much pressure on girls? Is this because society has certain expectations about how girls should be?
