I Am Inquisitive
Since I was a kid, I have always been curious about what people are thinking and feeling. I am curious about what makes us who we are. The human mind and brain are very complex topics. There are still many unsolved mysteries and theories for psychology. For example, the “Nature vs. Nurture” mystery is whether we become who we are because of the environment or our genes. I am intrigued to work toward resolving these mysteries.
Sad Truth
As I built a better understanding of psychology, I found out that this field is more than just solving mysteries of mind and brain. I began to be aware of mental health. Many people are suffering from mental illnesses daily and depression is one of the most serious ones. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 264 million of all ages worldwide suffering from depression. However, just 41% of people with mental illnesses in the United States received professional health care or other services in 2018 as reported by Mental Health First Aid USA.
These heartbreaking statistics influenced me and immediately prompted me to help those with mental disorders who are in pain every day because of insufficient aid. I understand that I want to be one of the people who can help those who are suffering from mental illnesses.
My Action
I had never touched psychology in depth before in my life until the senior year of high school. In order to confirm if I indeed want to study psychology, I decided to take a psychology class that year. I learned plenty of basic knowledge and concepts about psychology. I found out that actually studying psychology did not weaken my interest in this field; instead, it strengthened my interest because psychology is extremely interesting and attractive to me. I certainly want to continue studying psychology, I realized, after taking that course.
So Why Psychology?
Solving those mysteries and helping more people are my motivations and goals in choosing psychology as my major.
I am still new and young in this field, so there are still more things to learn and study about psychology. There are still so many things I have never seen, heard of, and touched in this field.
Although the world of psychology is too broad and complicated, I still decided to explore more about this world. Adventures in this journey might be tough and long, but I will not give up moving forward.
As my journey of exploring psychology continues, I will share my experiences about it on this website. Hopefully, you will find them interesting and reach out to me during the journey.
