About the Blog
What was once an area of color and culture has become a construction site for some bland towers. 5 Pointz was the graffiti mecca of Queens, where people passing by on the 7 train, or on foot, can look in awe at the great pieces of urban art splattered along the sides of warehouses. This blog will be looking back at the glory days of 5 Pointz, its demise, as well as its reincarnation in Brooklyn.
About the Author
I am, simply, just another person of Queens that has grown up taking the 7 train. As a kid, I’ve never seen much “art” around my neighborhood, unless I go to a museum or something like that. But the one thing artsy that’s clear in my memories is 5 Pointz. Everyday, on the 7 train, I’d pass by Court House Sq, which is now just Court Sq, and look out the window to see the different works of art. Every train ride, I’d try to find a different piece to look at or a different word to try and read. I distinctly remember Biggie Smalls’ face next to a large lion, I remember the piece that stood out the most.
It was tragic to see that, one day, pieces were being covered up with white paint. Permits were approved for the building of twin 48-story towers, replacing one of Queens’ prized possessions. It felt as though a part of my childhood had been taken away. So, given the opportunity, I decided to recount and reminisce 5 Pointz and its story.
