Types of Successful and Unsuccessful Designs by Ivy Zhao

surfrider_ad_sushi_cropThis is a very successful design because first of all, the designer’s message was to prevent people from littering and polluting the ocean with garbage. So in order to make it effective, he or she chose to use sushi, a snack that contains seafood from the ocean, disguising it with a paper bag for the rice and filling. So by using blue, bold text, the viewer can immediately realize that this is a warning to prevent people from throwing trash into the waters as whatever you eat may have came from there. It does seem to give a psychological effect on the viewer.

This is another successful design that I really like. First of all, there is little text which can sometimes be beneficial to the viewer since we want to read things that are fast and brief. Here is a image of a bottle of Tabasco hot sauce which you can already tell is really hot from the smoke coming out from behind. Using negative space was a very smart idea since the bottle is a bold color so using white will bring the image closer. For the text, the designer used the contrast of bold letters as well as size.

mcdonalds_ad

This is an obvious design that is brief and concise. It’s  a McDonlads ad that uses big high def images of satiating hamburgers to lure the viewer into buying McDonalds products.

Unsucessful Designs

This is a poor design since it is really hard to read with the type being too flashy. I also don’t see how the background helps convey the message of the text whatever the message is.

climber_no_transparency

I really don’t understand what’s going on in this design. How does rock climbing have anything to do with the word Shakeout? I like the negative space but no clear message.

LHJ4_522_17

This was one design that gave me a headache. There was way too much text, too much going on for one design. I don’t even want to read it since the spacing of words were cluttered all over the place. SOmetimes its best to make things simple with a few words and an image.

Punchcutting

Punchcutting is an unique method of designing. It requires a lot of hard manual labor while meticulously following each step. Each step requires a lot of patience and precision because if it is not done correctly, then the whole project would be ruined. Although punch cutting is a traditional method of typesetting, it is a form of art that will be admired.
