I believe this signage works because the different color portray different locations. The white space between each allows for clear reading.

I believe this sign works because the color contrast works. The smoke making an image of a gun portrays a clear message.

This works because it portrays a clear message. The idea of the baby with an oreo with drinking milk. Along with the letter spacing for the text on the bottom works.

This sign does not work because of the content. The content of alcohol and gun makes this sign extremely revolting. Lego is normally for kids so the idea of adult content should not be visible.

This sign does not work because when you think of red bull you think of it giving you wings. This revolting idea of bye bye eiffel tower does not give you any indication of an energy drink. Maybe power hungry instead.

I believe this is not a good design because of the grey background. It clashes with the white text which makes it a little difficult for it to read.

Punchcutting HW #2 Justin Ng

Q: How you think working with this method would affect your design

A: In my opinion, working with this method one has to be absolutely precise about their design. Because punch-cutting is so direct, the user will not be able to design as freely compared to a simple click on a computer. The process itself is very meticulous, and I think if we were to transfer that onto our work we will spend countless number of hours brainstorming before we actually start. That would be a negative perspective on punchcutting. A positive perspective would be that because it is so meticulous, every type is made to perfection. Our design, whether it be organized or random the design will have the same type face throughout the whole project. And through that we are able to focus on other things like space variation, letter variation, etc. In conclusion, punch cutting has some pro and cons, but it is something that is not obsolete.

What is Graphic Design? – Justin Ng.

At the first glance of the blog, the immediate thing I realized was “graphic designers work with drawn, painted, photographed, and computerized images.” After interpreting that line, it creates an image in my head and first thing that comes to mind is 42nd st, Times Square. Being a New Yorker, walking down 42nd street is like a jungle. There are thousands of people pushing and shoving, but most importantly are the design of every retail store or company. After reading the article I came to realize that there’s countless of minute details and style that goes into graphic designs. And every store has their way of portraying such a design to intrigue us, the bystander’s reaction and experience. And it is through “image-based design and type-based design” that can make all these designs shine. More importantly the way these designers chose to convey their message is vital. It taught me that everything was not simply copied and pasted. But through careful decision-making only then the iconic 42nd street stands out the way it does.

One question i have for the author is, how does one differentiate what type of type-based design to use? One probable answer would be for example, if your poster is about a movie, you try to use words and a font that has a direct vibe. Whether it be a suspenseful or a thriller movie, the design has to be able to “arrest your attention.” Different designs will portray different meanings, which is extremely important. And it is through the expert graphic designer’s eye that they are able to convey such a message through something as simple as one word.
