Blog Homework 3- Sally Lim

post

I think this was successfully designed because the context is so clear and apparent to anyone who looks at it. Personalizing your own post is saying something about yourself, and I thought it was interesting and clever how they inserted a mirror as the stamp.

come-a-little-closer

At first I thought this was a little mortifying, but then I understood what it meant and I thought that it was executed very well. Many deaths occur because people are too close to the track and end up falling onto it. This design is so prominent with the negative space that when you look at it, the first thing you say is, “WHOA! I need to step back.”

ipod-music

I’ve always enjoyed Apple’s designs because they are intriguing and catching to the eye. This one really stood out to me because it goes well with the message they are trying to sell. The ipods represent a piano which makes music, and you can listen to this music on an ipod. I think that the purple background was perfect to the apparent white and black ipods.

badlawyerad0001

I think this design for a lawyer is poorly designed because I don’t know where to even begin to read. The color scheme is all over the place, and the important words are not prominent and pleasing to the eye. It is almost straining to look at this design.

rapscallions

This is another design that I think is too crowded because there are different colors going on, and too much text for a design like this. I think that it could work with less text and one color text.

Punchcutting-Sally Lim

I think I would fail using this method because I like to change things around all the time, and with punchcutting, there is no room for mistakes. As I was watching the video, I was amazed at how much effort, time, and patience it took to make one letter in a certain font. With this method, you have to be very meticulous with what you are doing, or else, you have to start the whole process again. I would say that if I were to use the punchcutting method for my design, it would probably take me more than one day to really edge my letter the right way, get it to the size that I want, and placing it correctly. This is something that you really need to focus on or it will take days to finish a design the way your want it.

Blog Homework 1- Sally Lim

I thought that the article was very informative in explaining the anatomy of graphic communication. This article definitely opened my eyes to the world around me. I never really thought about the process of making a poster, sign, logo, etc; it was just there for me to see. Now, however, I notice that each and every artwork has a lot of minds and ideas put into it. Like the article stated from candy wrappers to T-shirts… everything begins with a design to make their product or advertisement eye-catching. One thing that stood out to me in the article was the ‘Type-based design’ section. I always thought graphic communication only dealt with pictures, graphics, and images, but after reading that section I realized that type is truly an important aspect to design: knowing where to place the letters or whether or not it is necessary in conveying the message.

I would ask the author, “When creating a design for a client, say ‘Hershey’ chocolate brand, why has the design of their products changed over the course of years since their original design?” A probable answer to this question could be that over the years, as technology and print production started to become more advanced, so did the eyes of the world. The original Hershey design is still present in current products, but enhanced to attract more customers from competing brands. We are reaching a more technological world, that anything outdated or “looks old” might not appeal to many people who want to buy their product. I would say that it could be easy and difficult. for designers to design for such a reputable company. Easy, because there is already a design, and it is a matter of what will make this product stand out. Difficult, because a designer would not want to take a risk and totally change a popular product known to people all over the world with a couple of enhancing designs. After all of the designing, many eyes look to approve of the product before it comes out and once it is out, only the world can judge the design of the product.
