Punchcutting

I take my hat off to the people that have had the patients to sit and create the letters that we use today. I do not feel that I would ever be able to sit and punch out the letters, I like that I can preview the fonts that I would like to use and in a matter of second I can just delete it and then try out a new type. I think That if I had to use this method it would take me a very long time and I don’t know if I would really like it. My favorite thing about my projects is that I can experiment with different types. this method would take away time from that and my designs would not be what they are like.

Hello Everybody,

In my opinion, determining whether a design works or not is based on the meaning behind the design.  If I were evaluating a design, I wouldn’t look and see whether it were too complex or too simple, I would look at what the design was made for.  I would also look to see if the design matches its meaning.

A design I didn’t like was the 2012 London Olympics design.

I feel that this represents London in no way what so ever.  The Olympics are world-wide and every year, the culture of the host city is represented in the logo.  To me, I see no elements of London, or their culture in this.  It is a clever design, but it doesn’t work for me.

Dr. Zizmor Subway Design.

This design is the subway poster of the infamous Dr. Zizmor, a dermatologist.  There is nothing in the poster that represents a good design except for the fact that it is so poorly designed that people remember it because they are overwhelmed by this terrible poster.  The colors don’t match well with the text, the alignment just isn’t good.

Choking Poster.

This poster for what to do when someone is choking is famous but I personally don’t like the design.  The colors to me don’t mix well with the text because it becomes hard to read the black text when the color changes from yellow to purple as the background.

A design that works for me is the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game logo.

What I think works with this Vector Logo is every single element and detail in this design.  The facade that goes around Yankee Stadium (the location of the All-Star Game) is something that is known about Yankee Stadium.  The Yankees Organization is very famous for wearing pinstripes alone.  The Yankees stand for class so the typeface in the design is simple, and classy.  The colors are representative of the New York Yankees, and I believe this design works.

The Obama Hope Campaign poster.

First and foremost, I choose no political side.

The simplicity in the poster is what makes it work for me.  The contrasting colors that represent the United States in the Red White and Blue work perfectly for me.  The word of “HOPE” at the bottom is all that his campaign is about.  It is bold to really show that it is a strong message.  Then President Obama himself on the poster looking into the distant as if he has hope makes the poster work.

ING Marathon (NYC)

I am a person of clean designs and this one is one that I like.  The white background contrasts well with the navy blue and orange text.  The Sponsor with their logo, Location, and slogan are all presented clearly on this design.

Typesetting/Punchcutting

I think this method would hinder the amount of creativity that could be put into a design. Whilst, it is truly fascinating and cool how he puts so much time into each letter, I can imagine that after doing all of that work, I’m not sure I would still want to, or be able to make a design with type similar to that which we make in class. I would love to learn how to do all punchcutting, but it really does make me appreciate modern design programs by putting into perspective the amount of time it used to take to set type. It must have been so incredibly frustrating to get something wrong after you had worked so long to make it perfect. Watching these videos gave me a lot of respect for the people who had to do this.

Successful/Unsuccessful Design

How do you decide what is a successful design and what is a not so successful design? Collect three design samples that you consider successful, and three samples you consider unsuccessful. Six samples altogether.

Post them on the blog in “Blog Homework 3”, and explain why you think each is either successful or not successful.

Make sure your name is included in the post

Punchcutting

The man who show how to punchcutting seems to have patience because finishing a production requires lots of time. Unlike today’s graphic design with computer, we can print a one page article within a few seconds. According to my observation, the man uses plastic film to trace the word “R” which is similar to the tracing paper I used for the first assignment. Also, the man try to perfect the edge little by little. I think this is the attitude toward our designing process.

Punchcutting-Sally Lim

I think I would fail using this method because I like to change things around all the time, and with punchcutting, there is no room for mistakes. As I was watching the video, I was amazed at how much effort, time, and patience it took to make one letter in a certain font. With this method, you have to be very meticulous with what you are doing, or else, you have to start the whole process again. I would say that if I were to use the punchcutting method for my design, it would probably take me more than one day to really edge my letter the right way, get it to the size that I want, and placing it correctly. This is something that you really need to focus on or it will take days to finish a design the way your want it.

Punchcutting

As many of the prior posts have acknowledged, punchcutting is a long, arduous process. One that has much room for error as the typesetter must be careful and pay close attention to what he or she is doing. Other than the errors that may occur during the punchcutting process, which will be solved through trial and error, the only issue I see that will affect any of our designs is quick turn around. In today’s world, designers and agencies have the ability to create and recreate designs, photographs, ads, stories and much more at a moments notice and hand them to their clients within a days time. I do not see that happening with punchcutting due to its long processes.
