A Corrupt Government
After reading Prison Writings, Ward Churchill’s articles, and my fellow classmates essays I would say that justice and race are two terms that don’t mix very well. Race and injustice sounds a little better, especially in America. To say that race has no affect on the way justice is served would be a lie. Whether we like it or not, we live in a society where everyone is being judged and race falls into one of those categories. In Prison Writings, Leonard Peltier really hit home with the fact that being an Indian was his only crime. Throughout his life he was scrutinized, set up, beaten, and jailed for being an Indian. Two life sentences for two murders that he did not commit sounds more like injustice to me. Leonard would also bring up numerous amounts of times that the FBI and GOONS would come to their reservations to either kill them or instigate them enough to make them commit a crime. This is a perfect example of how race is affecting how justice is served. After September 11, 2001 Muslims were targeted as possible terrorists. They were jailed just on suspicion. Once again the government had no hard evidence. In knowing this they created a new law called the Patriot Act. History shows us that instead of simply breaking the law, the government creates a new law that fits their needs. We see people that spoke out against government policies were targeted by corrupt law enforcement throughout the Unites States. The U.S. has proved to make many mistakes throughout history. The day our government stops being corrupt is when we can put race and justice into the same sentence.
