For my draft, I began to take some footage of various locations. My final essay will be a lot longer, but the for the draft I wanted to practice writing music against scenery. As I was writing, I wanted to suggest a certain mood. I think the mood that comes off this footage is nostalgic and soothing. I want the audience to embrace the beauty our world has to offer and I think certain tunes can really help with that. I want to go further, and capture different parts of the world, including the constant NYC rush, maybe some footage of Central Park, possibly some footage from the top of the Empire State Building.
I haven’t quite figured out yet what kind of story I want to tell. I’m thinking maybe tell the story of how our race is so caught up with their own lives, that nobody has time to take a break and enjoy what’ s around them. Music will distinguish the rushed, aggravated and stressed life from the calm, tranquil and peaceful moments that seem to be rare in this world.

Kris, Have you watched “A Story for Tomorrow” on our class blog Watch page? If not, check it out. A lot a work there on merging imagery, music, and story that could give you some inspiration.
Hey Kris,
This is really cool. This made me think of that moment in the car where the music is playing and I put my head on the window and watch the other cars pass by or scenery disappear and reappear I imagine scenes in my head and what I imagine is influenced by the kind of music that is playing. I dont know if this is a universal thing, or something I am the only one guilty of doing, but this is what I thought of. In that sense, what I thought of is nostalgic in a way, and so I guess your music worked in that way even in this short clip.
I also think that you should keep the width of the frame in mind, because the scenery flows, and when the screen becomes narrow it disrupts that flow. Then again maybe you did it on purpose to disrupt the flow. In addition, it would be interesting to see the contrast between what you film during the day, and what you film during the night (if thats something you thought about). I also remember as a child looking out of the window in the car and trying to follow the moon with my eyes as it disappeared and reappeared.
I like your intended story line about nobody having time to enjoy whats in front of them because everyone is so caught up with the busy life of NYC. In addition to the music portraying this, i think you can continue interweaving the more still scenery and the moving car – this kind of fast then slow thing going; and maybe you can even do a close-up of one thing for like a second or two and then go back to the moving or whatever the scenery will be. I dont know if this makes any sense, but its just some food for thought. Over all, I think this is a really cool idea, and your music sounds really good. So I can’t wait to see what the final project will look and sound like !
Sincerely,
Sofia
Hey Kris,
Your idea is very interesting to me. I like the idea to tell the story about us being too busy to take time and enjoy our surroundings. It’s not like we have to travel very far to see beautiful scenery and just relax and take it in but you’re right that we’re all too busy and involved with our own lives to do that.
The video you showed here is nice, and I like that you go from footage from a car to the footage by the waterfall and then back to the car. It makes it feel like a trip almost. But I agree with Sofia that you should be careful with the width of the frame because it felt like a break in the flow of the rest of the video.
As someone who isn’t musically or artistically talented in the least I’m really excited to see what music you choose and how you incorporate it into the piece.
Thank you,
Iordan
Hey Kris!
I am absolutely loving on this idea. I think that in order to make it into an “essay”, you are going to need to have a set plot line or a set message that you want to convey to your audience. If you want to capture the essence of appreciating what is around you, what images are you going to want to show the reader? Could you potentially play with fading the music in and out as your show the most important scenes in the video?
I also find myself wanting to hear a story. I know you are super deep and creative and love poetry, so maybe a voice over 0f some of the words or thoughts that come to mind? For some reason, I keep coming back to those Nike commercials about how the woman is in a relationship with running… I can’t find the link right now but it was basically a bunch of slowed down video with the voice over of her thoughts about the topic. It doesn’t depict a journey that it seems you are trying to convey, but it definitely evokes emotion from the audience.
What about black and white? Slow motion? Can you incorporate some of these tools into your video?
Good luck man, thanks for letting me watch!
