Knockoffs – From Bags to Make up

Usually when people think of knockoffs and refer to something as being “fake,” they may be referring to things such as bags or shoes. Nowadays, makeup companies are copying bigger brands and coming out with similar makeup, only more affordable. This new trend of copying makeup, written about in an article by Alix Strauss in The New York Times, has angered several makers of popular make up products. As the vice president of the NPD Marketing group, a company that does industry research, “Usually, mass market copies prestige because they follow the trend of the consumer.” If a certain brand or type of makeup is getting a lot of attention, then other companies want to use the same idea so they can get business too. One product that was copied by companies such as Victoria’s Secret is the Naked Palette, an eyeshadow palette, by Urban Decay. Makeup usually doesn’t have a certain design or distinct print like clothing or a bag would. It has formulas, texture, and color, which is easy to copy without making it obvious that it is a copy of the original. Make up is just as much a part of fashion as clothing, bags, shoes, and accessories are, and knockoffs are a big business when it comes to facial products too.
