Research Project – Assignment 1

1. What is your preliminary thesis or working research question (the thing about your topic you want to find out)? NOTE: Your topic must be well-phrased and formulated, rather than a petty observation about your topic.

2. How do you plan on supporting your research? What types of sources do you think you will need? What sorts of obstacles might you run into when trying to conduct research on this topic? If you are undertaking a creative/hybrid route, consider how you’ll express your influences.

3. Why is this topic interesting to you? Why do you care about this topic?

4. Why should your readers care about this topic?

Going along with my teachable moment personal narrative, I would like to extend it to come my research paper. The working research question for this project is should we set the same standards for children that have developmental disabilities, specifically autism, as those that do not? I plan on supporting my research by examining and observing children that are in gifted classes, regular classes, and special education classes to see how they learn and think. I will also try to interact with these children through different activities so that I can have a more holistic view of them rather than just focusing on their intelligence. In addition, I will be looking for articles as well as videos to try and get some ideas as to how I want to do the observation and really narrow down to what it is I’m hoping to find. Obstacles that I think I might run into when conducting research on this topic is finding specific articles to support, as well as having the children to cooperate with me.

This topic is interesting to me because I have two younger siblings and cousins, and my family friends all have little kids, thus being around these children so often makes me want to learn more about them. Furthermore, every children has different personalities, and a few of them are in special education classes at school, but I realized that even though they have less people in their class, the difficulties of their work are the same as the regular classes, and they are still given the same amount of time to be expected to learn, so I hope to find out if this is really fair, or is there a better solution for this. To add on, often times, when being around a group of children that is not all special needs, you sometimes forget about the few special needs children, so maybe it is right for us to give them more attention because of what they are born with. My audience should care about this topic because the children are the future. In order for the world to progress an advance, it will depend on the children and the potentials and talents they have in them that allows them to contribute to the continuous improvement in the different aspects from arts to science.
