State Dependent Writing Exercises

Writing Mimesis

After I spent some time writing down the lyrics of a song, and began writing, I realized that what I wrote was somewhat related to the theme of the song. Specifically, the song that I chose to copy out is from a tv show, revolving around the ups and downs of three families in the year of the kids taking the gaokao (the China version of the SAT). Thus, the prompt that I wrote for my own writing is my reflection of my relationship with my family, and how life was like during the last two years of high school. When writing, I also realize that the pace at which I think and the rhythm of the sentences are rather slower that how I normally write.

Writing following Hormesis/stress

When I started writing after a morning walk, I realized that I was having a difficult time beginning to write something. I believe that this is because when I have alone time, especially when I’m only doing one thing, I tend to think about a whole lot of different problems that I am currently dealing with. Thus, instead of being relaxed after the walk, I became more stressed since I was overthinking and worrying about too many things, so when I went back to the desk to start writing, it was hard. Even while writing, I wasn’t completely focused on writing in one whole sitting. After writing many so sentences, I paused, and then when I went back to continue writing, I was writing about another topic.
