In light of our recent discussions about deep web and what is available for indexing by Google, you might be intrigued by a news item today that says that some Facebook comments are now findable via Google search. Google is not indexing comments within Facebook pages but instead comments on blogs and websites that use Facebook’s commenting system as an add-on. Do you think this is a good idea?

I feel that this is another case in which the case of Google and its privacy policy comes up. Using Facebook’s commenting system as an add-on is certainly not a good idea in my opinion. Some people may not want their comments on Facebook to appear on Google search results; I definitely would not want that. Facebook and Google are two different things and they should be kept separate. Google should not incorporate aspects of Facebook into its search results because that may cause problems for many people over security and privacy issues. People make comments on Facebook to be seen only by their Facebook friends not by ALL Google users. One can say that it is an invasion of privacy.
As I understand it, it’s not that comments made within Facebook are being indexed and made findable within Google. It’s that some websites (such as blogs) are using a system for readers to add comments that tacks on a Facebook commenting system to the site. At least I think that’s what’s going on here. Maybe someone else can figure this out.
