Using Google Search Data to Gauge Levels of Racism
On National Public Radio this week, I listened to a fascinating episode of the show, “On the Media,” that featured a segment about an economist who analyzed Google search data for key words to assess levels of racism in different states.

Class Activity for December 7
Write your own blog post here that answers these two questions:
- What three things that you learned this semester about doing research have been the most useful to you (or are likely to be the most useful to you)? Please explain why for each of those things.
- What is one thing that you wish we had spent more time covering in class or that we failed to get to in class? Why do you wish we had gotten to that?
Then, the class will be divided up into three-person groups. Members of each three person group will discuss how they answered the two questions. Then as a group they will decide how they will answer the two questions as a group. Those answers will be written up in a new blog post (one member of the team can do the typing and posting to the blog, but all members of the team should be listed by name in the blog post and should contribute to the creation of the post).

Comments on the Sample Annotated Bibliographies
I’ve now finished grading all but two of the annotated bibliographies you did for the December 5 homework assignment and have some comments that you’ll want to take to heart as you work on your annotated bibliography for the final project.
MLA Style
- Make sure you follow the latest version of MLA style for your citations
- See the guide to MLA style from the online writing center at Purdue University, which is very good
- If you are copying automatically generated citation from a database or from a tool like EasyBib, double check that citation using the MLA style guide above (don’t put 100% in these automation tools)
- In your annotation, if you mention the name of a book, journal, magazine, or newspaper, you must set it in italics
Identifying Article Types
- For articles in your bibliography, you must specify correctly the type:
- peer-reviewed journal article
- non-peer-reviewed journal article
- magazine article
- newspaper article
- If you are stumped, you can ask me or any other librarian for help.
Spellcheck and Proofread Your Work
- There is no reason to do things like type “Google” as “google” (unless you are using the word as a verb)
- If you read your annotations aloud to yourself, you can easily spot wording that is awkward or grammatically incorrect

New Video from Google about Evolution of Search
On the Official Google Blog, there’s a new post with a video from Google discussing how search has evolved at the company over the years. What do you think Google needs to do next? What direction should they head in? What kinds of things can’t you search for easily in Google that you wish you could?

Basics of MLA Style for Articles
While you may find EasyBib a useful tool for helping you do citations, you should also have a basic understanding of how to do citations, as tools like EasyBib will often make mistakes or won’t catch your mistakes as you enter information.

A blog post by Jon Mitchell at the influential tech blog, ReadWriteWeb, titled “What Do Google Ads Know About You?” is essential reading for anyone in the class who is doing a topic on Google’s advertising business or on Google and privacy.
