Research

Throughout this semester I’ve learned many things about doing research. Three things that I feel that will be most useful to me is searching with the terms And/Or, learning about the many databases of information there are, and using concept maps to organize and branch out our ideas.

One thing that I wished we had spent more on is weaving out which databases are the most efficient.

Christopher Ly – Database

Communication and Mass Media Complete

This database focuses on information revolving around mass media and communication. It is a merger of CommSearch and Mass Media Articles Index which were both their individual databases. The majority of the content of this database are journal articles. Communication and Mass Media Complete has controlled vocabulary titled as “Subject Terms”. One surprising thing i found about this database was that it has a meter on the bottom of each article stating how relevant it thinks the article is to your search.

Literature Resource Center

The Literature Resource Center contains biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of Authors of literature; such as novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, etc. This database has a variety of formats including critical essays, articles, book reviews, and bibliography. The controlled vocabulary is also very efficient on this database because not only does it a provide a list of different subjects pertaining to your search term, but each link also has the key phrases you search highlighted. One thing that separates this database from other databases is that it contain a really detailed list of subjects to help narrow your search more efficiently.

My Model of Research

My method of doing research is to first find the topic that I am researching. After I have my topic I’ll look into subtopics that pertain to the general topic. After choosing an interesting subtopic I can start developing a research question. Then I start searching through different databases and archives to find information on my research question. After I have gathered enough information, I will adjust my research question accordingly to answer my research question with support information I gathered through my research.

“Inside the Mind of Google”

After watching this video about Google, I have gather new insight towards this company how it functions. Before watching this video i kept wondering how Google made it’s money. I thought since Google was free to use how did they make money? However after watching this video i realized the enormous amounts of advertising Google contributes to.

On another note, i feel that if i were to start a research project on Google, i believe that the Wikipedia entry would be a more viable source. Wikipedia offers more recent and more detailed information on the company and its progressions.

What is easiest / hardest for me when i do research

The easiest part for me when i do research is finding general information of what I’m researching. The harder part would be finding specific details that could further my research.
