Most important things I learned in Lib1015

1)  I had learned how to use sources using the BEAM model. I learned to use sources appropriately.

2) The way to search a database using advanced search terms. I also learned methods on how to narrow my searches on library databases.

3) I had learned the way to find a narrow focused, unbiased research question.

I wish we had spent more time using more databases.

Research Question (Revised)

To what extent would the digitization of copyrighted written works in the Google Books database adversely affect members of the Author’s guild?

Databases

eMarketer- this database specializes in online Marketing research. It also gives current and future financial projections on many other internet services. Some commonly used formats used in the database are reports, articles, charts and interviews. “Statistics”, “Attitudes” and “case studies” are some examples of controlled vocabulary used frequently in this database. I was new to the feature “Tag cloud” used on this database.

ScienceDirect- this database provides full text access in areas such as science, technology and social science. Most of the search results gave me either Books or Journals on the topic. Two examples of controlled vocabulary that might be frequently used are “Case Studies” and “Pictorial Works”.  I have never seen an image search in a library database before this one.

Is Google making us Stupid?-Sherif Elzanie

Google is in fact making us less innovative thinkers however it in return makes our society a more efficient and knowledgeable community. The difference lies in the fact that a knowledgeable community  simply contains vast amount of information and is able to apply it rather than provoke further thoughts. The information however if simply taken as an object will in fact make us  more stupid. If you subtract all the other variables and simply focus on the information being read. However if you take the perspective of Google as a community exchanging ideologies and opinions it makes us more well rounded. The human element that google provides is far more expansive than any encyclopedia and may help the researcher get other perspectives and possible implications to a problem. At the same time one might question the interpretation of the word intelligence. It all basically lies in ones perspective of the word and whether it applies to profound thinkers or well rounded knowledgeable people. In my opinion it has made the everyday person more dependent yet  well rounded. In the article there was a very strict interpretation of Google as an information tool which neglected the social and diverse aspect of it. The availability of information has gave access for everyone to get accurate facts at the expense of our innovative and ambitious minds.

Sherif Elzanie-method of doing research

When doing research i generally like to know the big picture of the topic and get a sense for the different subdivisions and categories of the topic. When i have narrowed it down to a specific topic I try to narrow it down into more subdivisions by looking at different perspectives or perhaps different opinions. As i do this I also try to think “outside the box” by looking at an array of implications that this subject might be subjected to. After i have a good understanding on these subdivisions i try to find more specific information by finding my sources. Once i have a good amount of sources i begin evaluating each one based on their limitations and significance they might have on the topic i am looking to research. I also try to find links and connections between the sources in order to better write a well organized and constructive response to my research question.

Researching- Sherif Elzanie

The easiest part of researching is finding actually sources of information. I feel that the information is not hard to find and can be easily accessed using various sources of information databases including the internet.

I find it hard to prioritize these sources and organize them into secular categories. Moreover the organization of information i find may be a bit challenging at times. Also the significance of each source and the value of each source might also be tough at times.
